I'm wanting to start a new faction. And I can't decide between the two. Any help with choosing? I like them both aesthetically. The main drawn for templars over wolves is that I feel like I can get a better looking army through personalisation such as chains, scripture etc, rather than greenstuffing pelts on etc.

What about fluff?

Cheers in advance!

I play Space Wolves, but I'd have to say Black Templar, mainly because they're less popular and they've got a new Codex coming out in the next couple months. They're a cool army and it'd be nice to see some more.

If you're looking for competitiveness, especially in the long-term, then Wolves are probably the safer option. Black Templar tend to be mid-tier, whereas Space Wolves are usually mid-to-high tier among the Space Marine chapters.

If you can get your hands on the indomitus box cheap, they are heavily leaning towards a BT design, I think. I myself am playing Space Wolves and loved to kitbash and converse the models and like the norse background. But if I had to start from the ground up,I would also be torn between BT and SW. If rules are anything to you, wait till November and the BT codex. But rules change so maybe get a pack of intercessors and paint 5 as BT and 5 as SW? I think from a play style standpoint they are similar. I would go for BT right now. You dont see them too often and the indomitus marines as BT look kick ass.

If Templars are what you feel you can make the best looking force of, then go with them.

Wait for the Templar supplement and Combat Patrol/ LE box in November before making your decision.

It is now known for sure that this is coming, and making a decision sight unseen is foolish when a mere two month wait is likely to provide you with important information which could affect your choice.

Willing to wait for November? Wait to see the new models and then decide.

Wolves.

No bias here.

*sips cold mjod from his drinking horn* ask herself stripling why would you play Templars a pretender melee force when you could join the rout?

I'd recommend Templars for 40K and Wolves for Kill Team.

Templars are simplier and faster to paint - you'll probably feel like you're nearly finished just spraying them with a black undercoat, and then after a bit of detail a second coat of varnish. Naturally they get their jollies going on crusades and the like, so an army makes sense here.

Wolves are full of character inspired by vikings, werewolves and all that jazz. As natural pack hunters they are better suited to the smaller kill teams.

You see? Sometimes it is possible to have your cake and eat it...

Casual gaming, mostly solo-coop these days.

Maybe you should sit on a decision for a while rather than posting a new topic every week asking which faction you should play

There are no wolves on Fenris. Go with Templars.

"Because the Wolves kill cleanly, and we do not. They also kill quickly, and we have never done that, either. They fight, they win, and they stalk back to their ships with their tails held high. If they were ever ordered to destroy another Legion, they would do it by hurling warrior against warrior, seeking to grind their enemies down with the admirable delusions of the 'noble savage'. If we were ever ordered to assault another Legion, we would virus bomb their recruitment worlds; slaughter their serfs and slaves; poison their gene-seed repositories and spend the next dozen decades watching them die slow, humiliating deaths. Night after night, raid after raid, we'd overwhelm stragglers from their fleets and bleach their skulls to hang from our armour, until none remained. But that isn't the quick execution the Emperor needs, is it? The Wolves go for the throat. We go for the eyes. Then the tongue. Then the hands. Then the feet. Then we skin the crippled remains, and offer it up as an example to any still bearing witness. The Wolves were warriors before they became soldiers. We were murderers first, last, and always!" —Jago Sevatarion

Wolves if you prefer firstborn models. Primaris fit BT aesthetics much better.

Yeah unless they do chapter specific primaris doing an army of them ends up very generic.

You can add a few wolf tails and talismans but you really miss the pelts and other decorations first born have.

Considering that a new BT release seems to be right around the corner, perhaps wait and see how you like their new models?

But ultimately I recommend doing your own custom chapter, that way you can use the models and rules you like the best and kitbash models with your favourite bits. And some sort of primal germanic knights that combine themes and visuals of BT and SW certainly could work.

a lotta the parts that add the most distinction to your average space wolf model are usable on primaris (heads and shoulder pads) so if you're got the right bits you can really wolf up a SW intercessor.

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

Nah you want the wolf tooth necklaces, the pelts.

Rune plates it's all part of the aesthetics.

It works right now because primaris just arrived from the crusade but as time advances you'll want chapter specific kits.

sure but those can all be added on, barring useing upgrade kits and the grey hunters pack etc though you'd need to 3d print or green stuff additional parts though

Custom Chapter. You can play using either of their rules due to the way it all works now and if either end up sucking you can play as someone else. You can also do whatever aesthetics you want this way.
