Too damn close to the Mason Dixon line.

I'm getting back into Warhammer after a long hiatus, and my gf is interested in starting an army as well.

I was excited about the idea of crafting some custom terrain that would be themed to whatever army she chose, and did a lot of fun research on the internet based on the armies she expressed interest in (some forums, some archive.org trawling of the old GW website's hobby section, some White Dwarfs that I absolutely own and definitely did not find through PDFs of dubious legality), and there are a lot of great ideas out there.

But now there's a wrinkle: she's settled on Sylvaneth. And no matter how well I search, all I can find when I search any combination of "asrai", "sylvaneth", "dryads", "woodelves", and "terrain" is... forests. How to make 6" round forests for 8th ed. How to make tourney-legal knock-offs of the old Citadel Forests for early AoS. How to make kinda-sorta-maybe-tourney-legal knockoffs of the new forests for current AoS. For Seraphon (one of her other top contenders that got elminated) I found so many tutorials for cool ziggurats and spawning pools and stargates and ruins that I could've made. For Slaanesh I found so many tutorials for weird tentacle-y corruptions of nature I could've made. But for Sylvaneth... I found an old GW guide on how to make an Asrai Waystone, and Asrai.Druchii.net had a half-dozen posts that were sorta useful. But other than that every scenery tutorial is just.... hOw tO tReEs.

Please, show me any and all cool ideas and/or tutorials for Sylaneth-themed (or Oldhammer Woodelf-themed, I'm not particular) terrain that aren't just forests of various shapes/sizes/seasons/color schemes. I HAVE A MIGHTY NEED.

Maybe a bunch of obviously human/ork/whatever fortifications and war equipment, which has been long abandoned and now overgrown with creeping vines and mushrooms and such? Give the impression of an old battlefield or warcamp that is being reclaimed by Nature. Things like cannons, cheval-de-frise, watchtowers, wagons, ruined walls, etc. Could also freely litter them with old bones and discarded weapons. You could even have things like a stone tower that had kudzu-type greenery spilling out of its arrow-slits.

This is technically a variation on forests, but you could do forest fire themed terrain. Dead, burned trees, combined with blackened or ash-covered earth, or heaps of fallen and splintered tree carcasses.

They are still elves and probably enjoy a good tower

Otherwise, tents or huts. Elegant ones, rather than rough and ready.

Mystic stone circles, wild gardens, rivers with elegant bridges, strange grottoes or cave entrances, meinhirs, secret pools and waterfalls (probably only work as a board edge piece, but could be done relatively easily. Check out model railway tutorials).

I'd probably go tree-house and hidden archer platform myself. Flinty's suggestions are all good as well.

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.

Gathering the Informations.

Go bits-hunting, if possible.

The Wood Elf Glade Guard, Glade Rider, and Dryad sprues had some stuff that would be great for the purposes of (sorry not sorry!) really sprucing up the forest scenery that Sylvaneth actually take as part of their faction.

Glade Riders & Guard had some runic waystones on their sprues. And Spites attached to fallen branches.

One of the big problems you're going to face, in my opinion, is that right now we don't know much about the Sylvaneth outside of "they can control forests and tend to dwell in forests". Additionally a lot of people have always griped about the costs on the Citadel Woods because train stores and the like have cheaper alternatives. With all that said and done?

We know of there being something called "Soulpod Groves" where the Sylvaneth are grown and tended. We know of them dwelling in the ruins of lost civilizations in some of the Realms. So maybe look at the Azyrite Ruins as a "base" to start having things growing over it?

Thank you so much for the responses, those are all fantastic ideas! A few of those were things I'd thought of myself, but there was a bunch I never would've come up with. In particular I really loved the ideas about tents, caves/grottoes, cannons and wagons and walls (I'd thought of nature reclaiming fortresses, but not individual pieces like that), treehouses, the bits suggestions, and the concept of "soulpod groves". My girlfriend had wondered whether Dryads had anything equivalent to the Seraphon spawning pools, but I was going off of WH8 lore where the Dryads mostly converted unfortunate mortals. I didn't know they have lore now about being naturally grown/born. That gives me a TON of great ideas. > : D

That's enough in the concept department to get me rolling; the next thing I need is pictures so I can kind of eyeball what materials, bits, and tools I'll need. Anyone have any good pictures of terrain that's sort of in the same ballpark as what's been described here? Obviously it'd be hard to find anything that's a 1:1 match, but anything at all that I can use as a guide would be fantastic.

Also:

This hurt me physically. And yet I respect you for it. Why.

Gardens and fences made of vines perhaps? I'd imagine sylvaneth would still have agriculture and construction right?

As a note, there has never as far as I'm aware been anything about Dryads "converting unfortunate mortals". The Forest Spirit concept from the days of WHFB was that they were just...there. The only thing involving "mortals" were the Tree Kin, which consisted of animated hulks of trees possessed by the spirit of a slain Asrai/Wood Elf.

If it were me coming up with a concept for a Sylvaneth bit? I'd look at the ruins from AoS and go from there. I'd also look at the "Creeping Vines" and "Barbed Bracken" from GW. They can be molded to fit a surface before you attach them with superglue and make a really nice 'overgrown' bit.

You could mix this with some living trees and shrubs, showing new growth from nearly dead stumps. Maybe combine it with some obvious Chaos desecration, with the new growth eating away at the Chaos scarring.
