Me? I’m soon to be finally running the campaign of my dreams. Starts with the founding of a new settlement to exploit a newly discovered Dome. And as each campaign concludes, the settlement is intended to grow and develop alongside the discoveries.

40K itself can’t really do that in the same way. That’s not to say 40K is therefore inferior, just necessarily different.

And as each player only really needs a couple of dozen models at most, there’s a greater excuse to really go to town converting them, especially if you want/need to represent different load outs.


It’s just a very different experience.

This is definitely a limitation of the Necomunda system. 40k is probably the ultimately 'pick up' game in that you can collect it, travel to most towns or cities in the Western world, and you'll probably find someone to play against.

That being said I would definitely recommend trying to get a close group of gaming buddies that you can choose to play what you want. My mates and I take in turns choosing a game system, we all collect and play that for some months (usually one of us does the planning/organising etc. if they are more familiar). We're currently running a Blood Bowl league, have Fallout lined up after that and possibly Necromunda after. All games that benefit from having a kind of GM and promote campaign/development play.

For me, it's a different experience, but some of my favourite wargaming memories come from Necromunda. Just the way the characters build up over time, the stories you can write in, the rivalries that are created when you've played for a few times. That Juve that takes out 2 gangers in close combat, becomes a leader, is hated by all of the other players (they are all trying to kill him ) - nothing can match that in terms of emotional attachment in a one-off, mass combat game like 40k where you just shovelling dice and miniatures on and off the board. So I think if you're really into wargames, you definitely owe it to yourself to give it a try and find some other willing souls.

Yes that is very true.

I have found that for the person running the campaign you have to treat it like a real military exercise (anyone who has ever tried to run D&D will sympathise with this too) and organise appropriately. For most groups of adults in modern life you will never, ever get everyone to commit successfully to a date - people will forget, last minute things happening. So the key is to be able to run the campaign with 75% attendance, if you demand 100% it will never happen. Make the game system or campaign so it can run while a person or two are missing, give them a chance to catch up next time etc. and have some method of informing for anyone that has missed key events. You can get free blogs on things like Wix these days that don't take too much time to setup and really help (the equivalent of the old club bulletin board and map really).

I have a couple of mates that drive me up the wall with their lack of organisation but you have to keep plugging away (constant alerts, reminders, confirmation of locations and even who is bringing snacks - all of the logistics!) but I think if you do sort it it is definitely worth the effort in the end!

I think most of us who love that game, and think now someone has been put off forever from such a wonderful game because someone wanted the feeling of crushing a noob, feel the same way!

Yes that was my experience too The_Real_Chris, in my view the worst element (or certainly biggest omission) from the new game. Caveat to that is I haven't kept up with the latest new releases so don't know if this has been rectified.

Don't know if this is useful at all but this thread has my thoughts on the matter. Basically it uses N18 for the main 'core' game; mechanics, skills, weapons and things of that nature, while using the classic game for the scenarios, pre and post game (so you get the balancing elements), as well as the advancement roll from the original (this is very much a subjective thing, I'm not a fan of the 'choose-your-advancement' process and the max toughness Goliath gangs that ensue after a few games.
