I've been planning a big terrain project for some time now. A big ruined cathedral.

I made a base plate from xps foam and used some special sculpting tools (a pen and some aluminium foil) to give it a nice texture and press in the floor tiles:

Here is the basic layout for the cathedral (the ruines themselves are not yet painted):

Now, here's my dilemma: in those areas where the walls of the cathedral have been destroyed and broken down, I want to introduce damage to the xps foam board. But I've never done that and I don't want it to look gak. So any advice there would be greatyl appreciated.

I'd like to get an effect where pieces of the stonework of the baseplate are broken and caved in. Thanks in advance.

I accidentally double posted this thread, no idea how that happened, my browser glitched out for a second there.

Edit: to specify what I mean, I am not asking how to add sand or rubble to the board. I am asking how to best cut away at the board to simulate it itself being broken due to falling debris or explosions.
