Why have they started doing more and more of these bizarre raffles? So tacky. Also how much money can they possibly be making from these? Do people out there really think "Oh wow if I spend £100 on something that I wasn't otherwise going to buy I have a 0.002% chance to win something worth £500". Surely the vast majority of people aren't this stupid are they? Quite sleazy stuff GW.
More likely that they're targeting the people already buying so that they go "Oh, I'm just shy of that next 50, may as well add another item to get that extra ticket."

Yep. I've got a basket full of stuff and was waiting for the Necro Slopper & Scabber in the New Year, but this might get me to checkout now.
They are targeting people who have been thinking about getting that FW Avatar of khaine / <Insert FW item> but been sat on their hands for the last 6 moths.. because reasons.. To finally say: "Eff it im getting my dang avatar I've always wanted.. Might as well do it now and maybe win a prize"
Speaking from the experience of a friend.. honest . He may or may not order a FW avatar of khaine and something else with birthday paypal donations..

Honestly I'm shocked to hear that. I literally don't even participate in free to enter giveaways since I don't consider the time and hassle taken to enter the contest to be worth the miniscule chance of winning. Maybe I'm a pessimist or something?

Also why 10AM ACST? At this time of year the only state/territory using that time zone is the Northern Territory, and their citizens aren't elligeble for the draw.
And it's not like anywhere else in the world uses UTC+9:30.

It's like free shipping for over £X amount. You don't buy things you don't want, but what you are encouraged to do is to spend more than you would at one time to get over the threshold so that you're not paying for nothing (shipping) but paying for more products
eg Free shipping for over £25. If you've put £15 in your cart and then shipping is £4 more then to get "free" shipping you only need to add a further £6 to your order.
£6 isn't that much so you go hunting for something that costs at least £10 to get your £15 up to £25.
And in the real world you'll often end up spending a bit more because what takes you over the limit might well not be exactly on the line, but a bit over.
A potential free model for £50 spent at FW prices is very much going to get you to buy another thing at the same time or commit to that purchase that you've been holding off on for ages.
Heck if GW hadn't made an awesome Slaanesh Battleforce for Christmas I'd be sorely tempted to get that Keeper of Slaanesh that I've been dithering over getting for years.
I wonder why there are never Forge World contests open to Americans? Obviously we can't use the pay to play option, but they never have a freebie entry...

You have no idea how strange you sound to me right now.
It's not akin to free shipping by spending X more. Because you get the free shipping in that scenario. In this scenario you get literally nothing, 999/1000 times. I'm bewildered that anyone thinks that 1/1000 occasion is worth anything at all, let alone any amount of legal tender.

Quite amazing. You don't want this thing enough to actually buy it, but attach it to a ridiculously one sided wager that's certainly not going to go your way and you're up for it?
I misjudged you GW, apparently this is actually a pretty decent ploy.
JWBS wrote: Quite amazing. You don't want this thing enough to actually buy it, but attach it to a ridiculously one sided wager that's certainly not going to go your way and you're up for it?
Some people just need a little push. I'd buy a Sabre Strike Tank if it had 40k rules, and I'm very tempted by the Proteus Land Speeder but don't think it would fit in with my Iron Hands.
The draw runs until the 27th as well which is important.
Let's say you get some cash money from some relatives for the ol' Xmas, you're not sure what to buy but you know you want Warhammer. Suddenly FW gives you the chance to win something you want but can't generally afford (i.e. a big bloody tzeentch bird) and all you need to do is spend half that to be in with a chance of winning. FW being FW there's loads of things that people want but can't justify spending so little on and usually wait for big orders. However, now there's incentive. You could win a Big Bird just for buying a Sabre Tank. It doesn't matter that is a 1/1000 or 1/10 billion chance, its still a chance. You think "What the hey, I want the Saber anyway and I could get a Big Bird" and FW has just made a sale that might not have been. f you can't understand that then you just don't get it JWBS.
Gert wrote: f you can't understand that then you just don't get it JWBS.
You don't understand basic mathematics if you look at this offer and you do "get it".
edit - I dunno why I even wrote that. Reading your rational again you said spending money you "can't generally afford" and it doesn't matter if the payoff is "one in 10 billion", it's enough of an incentive to make you spend money you don't have. This is just a crazy dumb perspective man but whatever.

Dithering over a purchase doesn't mean I don't want a thing, it just means that I've placed other things I want ahead of it. In this case I've noted that I've potential money to spend on Slaanesh models (not even just on models) and that in this case the Battleforce > Keeper from FW. It doesn't mean I don't want either, just that I've chosen one before the other. As I said if there were no other major purchase on the horizon right now then I'd be "tempted" to get the Keeper even though I know I'm likely not to win the prize. It is just nudging me toward weighting that purchase a little more than another hobby purchase.
When it comes to hobby stuff because its not essential there is a degree of open choice where totally marginal elements might tip the scales because in the end its not essential so it doesn't "matter". It's not like choosing between having running water or electricity for a month.

Okay, to put it another way, how much of a price cut would FW need to offer you on the thing you want in order to have you buy it? £5? A very small amount, to many people, but if that is the case then you're essentially saying that you'll gladly take a £5 bet with a payoff of £500, but a chance to win of 1/1000. That's just....I don't know what to say. I can't honestly believe you really think that, but you're wrapping yourself in knots to what, make me believe that you do believe this? To what end? Pure contrarianism?

You did read the part where I said that I'm not getting the Keeper from FW right now?
The FW trick hasn't convinced me, it tempts but hasn't convinced. Sure if FW turned around and put a 25% off deal on the Keeper yes I'd probably go for it over the plastic models. Since there is every chance of GW doing another sale of plastic models in the future but FW ones are much rarer. Or heck just because the Battleforce (in this case) is a collection of various cheaper products that I can get broken up over many months even if it costs more.
Yes and I understood it as you would potentially get the keeper, because of this discount, had you the money spare. Either way, you're telling me that this offer should be seen as having some real value, as opposed to what I'm arguing (it's entirely worthless).

No different from most major lotteries, and the odds are far worse on those.
Just pick Khorne Dragon or Porphyrion, sell it with some 20% discount - profit.
I just happen to very much want that Orion ship for 400 euros. Or a Reaver Titan

Chance to win free model doing what you would do anyway isn't worthless for anybody with common sense.
Sure odds aren't good but you aren't paying anything extra either. If you think that's worthless your grasp of math is worse than 1st grader.
Okay if you buy something just to enter draw and throw received models to garbage bin it's bad deal. But is there anybody stupid enough to do it?
