Hey all, brand new to the hobby and enjoying it so far. I was due to play my first ever game @ Christmas Day with my wife’s little cousin; he told me he had Kill Team so I ended up with the Octarius box set. Today I found out he was confused and it’s actually 40K that he collects for and plays.
I think we’re only going to play a 1000 points game Am I able to use the Kill Team Orks in 40K? And do you have any recommendations on what else I should get so I have something to game with.
Thanks!

Yes the Orks found in Kill Team are a unit of Kommandos which fully usable in 40k. If you're looking for basic kits for a basic army then consider picking up the Ork Combat Patrol as its essentially the faction starter set.

Yes - Kommandos are a unit in the Orks codex, and the new book updated their rules to allow you to take all the options available in the new kill team box. Theyre actually quite a powerful competitive unit, though less so if theyre 100% decked to the nines in their Kill Team best. The nice thing though with Orks is that a lot of their units use the same equipment - so maybe your Rokkit boy from your Kommandos is not optimal to take in a kommandos unit, but he can pull double duty as a Tankbusta as part of that squad as well.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"
"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"
"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"
"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!" |

Recomendations:
1) 40k rulebook
2) ork codex
3) ork combat patrol box
4) assembly tools - glue, clippers, exacto blade, maybe a can of primer.
5) TIME to read the books & assemble everything.
Welcome to the game.

The advise I give to all new players is to not jump into anything too big too fast. 1000 points requires a fair investment of cash to put together (several hundred dollars min for the models (combat Patrol box is a good place to start, but you'll need more for 1000 points); core rulebook and codex, over $100.00 for both of those books; paints, glue, snippers, and other modeling supplies will probably run you close to another $100.00, if you don't have them, a bunch of D6 dice, usually $10-$20 for enough to play).
My personal recommendation is to start out small at 500 points to get a feel for things and borrow dice and a rulebook from an existing player to read through before the game. This means that you could go for the Combat Patrol and with your current Kommando's, that should be enough to play. Just pick up the codex for now so you can get to know your army, and focus on just the assembly tools like clippers, a hobby knife, and glue for now, and go for the paints later. (Should keep your bill to around $300.00 total where it could easily be double that going in full bore.)
This also means you'll have a better feel for the game when you decide what units you want to buy to bring your army up form 500 to 1000 points.
Welcome to the hobby!

Also - don't feel like you need to actually BUY 1,000 points of units. Assuming your playing at someone's house and not in a GE store, you can use paper tokens or proxy whatever you want to use in your army.

Much good advice here. One thing I would like to add, is that the limited edition beast snagga box is still available for a decent price from ebay and other places - it has the codex, data cards and a bunch of decent models that combine well with the combat patrol and your kommadoz for a decent 1k points list. Just make sure to not spend much more than ~$200. I also echo what Mezmorki says - 9th actually has decent support for 500 points games, and while you will eventually outgrow that format, it's decent for entry-level games. Outside of that, feel free to swing by the dakka ork thread if you need any advice: https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/800443.page

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe. |

Thanks everyone, really appreciate your advice.
I ended up getting the combat patrol.
So my army looks as follows:
- Warboss in Mega Armour
- 10 Boys
- 5 Kommandos
- 3 Deffkoptas
- 1 Deff Dread
I used the 40K app to create a Patrol Detachment, and it ended up being 490 points.
Seems like the Ork book is sold out everywhere and there isn’t a PDF option. Even the app seems to be restricted as well where I need the book to unlock some details.

Have you checked EBay?

Calling brick&mortar stores near also is an option - there often is stock that might be sold online.
The other option would be getting a beastsnagga box from someone, it also has a codex in it.
