Just curious.
Looking at the book they don’t seem particularly any worse.
The ice clan that cause mortal wounds on 6s combined with the 6s count as two hits seems pretty good to me for example.

Bonesplitters you mean?
Expensive, not that durable minus one turn, shooting got waaaaaaaaay worse. Lost all monster related things. Their ability to punch depends on your ability to roll 6's(and 6 to hit=2 goes away when you go down from 5).
Also weak magic defence, no real ranged threat(the arrowboys are weak and only way to make them SOME threat is losing mortal wound thing) so if you come across army that basically negates melee(like flying fox lumineth, legion of first prince etc.
It's fun army though but if you face tougher lists you are in trouble.
Went to tournament last saturday with 1500 pts of pig riders(plus footboss. That's pretty much required for the 8" pregame move) and mega gargant to fill in points. Lost vs 5 salamanders and bastiladon(rest were just fodder really), won vs SCE(not optimal list though) and beast of chaos. But even those wins despite not being meanest lists out there were easily losable.
The 4+ ward one turn was big though. Both wins I negated broken ranks with it. Albeit can fail but that can win you game.

For me, it was the loss of breath of gorkamorka. My go to strat was using that to make a good ol rogue idol fly 30 inches over the back of the army, then start smashing up characters lol. Then there’s the 3.0 thing of no horde discounts, and the massive price hike. Combine that with worse casters and no monster hunting ability and they’re just not fun.
They’re a horde melee, magic buffing monster army who can’t horde, melees worse, buffs less, and can’t hunt monsters.

It's not totally hopeless though. One thing you do need though is less drops. The 8" pregame allows you to tag objectives pregame leaving them t1 and hit enemy right away. The 4+ ward can be used to deny broken ranks(3/3 with that so far). The mask(put 5+ ward to him) is also good tool.
You will get wiped but you can win on vp's. Week ago vs seraphon i ended up 11-0 after 2 rounds. Was enough to win despite tabled.
Armies that outdrop you and can teleport stuff around with plenty of shooting is worst matchup for you.
Just accept you'll get wiped and focus on vp's. As long as you aren't playing worst netlists you can win. Atm 3/4 with them.

Biggest problem is just that they’re not fun, or as fun as they used to be. Bonesplitterz In 1.0 were even better. They’re just an army gw does not like, haven’t gotten any new models for the entirety of AOS, I guess there’s the kill team thing, but eh.

Do they need new models though?
I think they’re pretty great.
New options could be a better discussion though

They don’t really need anything, but if I was asking, I’d love some nob size units, and a Fred flint stone style stone roller car .

They're not *bad* per se, but what they are is much more boring and less skill-dependent than they used to. In 2.0 they were a highly technical army, and almost all of that got stripped out in favor of boring stuff like a 4+ ward for one round, or mortals on 6s to wound. The only interesting rule that got added is the MW slot machine mask, and even that has little depth to it in that it's just something you pull the lever on. They also lost a lot of output, particularly vs monsters, which is a nonsensical change given their lore.
Basically they traded finesse and tricks and situational power for pure stats, and that isn't really a satisfying trade. Now they are basically just a wound sponge that your opponent has to grind through while you MW slot machine them, which doesn't feel particularly interactive for either player.

didn't even really improve in pure stats, all their infantry just got more expensive base, then lost the horde bonus. really not enough of a stat buff getting a higher save base to justify that. And I honestly prefer my 1.0 splitters, felt even better than 2.0.

so what it seems like is that they are not exactly bad but everyone is mad because they changed from what they used to be.
sound fair?

Well I'm at 3/5 with them. Common tale of games: I hit in, hit hard but then the combat is grind down with inevitable result of bonesplitters being wiped to the orc. However 1st turn locking up enemy to deployment zone with mad rush gives me enough vp's to win.
Of course win's weren't against top tier lists. Heaven forbid if something that real punch like 5 salamanders come alongside. 5 salamanders practically soloed the army to the death.
