I'm just assembling a set of Battle Sisters right now and it occurs to me that maybe I should not put them on bases just yet: Seems like it will be impossible to reach the inside of the robes, the backsides of the legs, etc. Even reaching the center of the base to texture and paint it seems like it will be next to impossible.

Just wondering what others do. Do you put pins in the bottom of the feet and work from the bottom to get at the inside of the robes?

Thanks.

I leave them off the base until I've painted the robes and then glue them on for the rest of the painting. I put the texture paint on later and usually get it everywhere without hitting the robes.

I paint my Sisters after full assembly, including bases. Works just fine for me. If it can be seen, I can reach it with a brush. This comes with a caveat, though. I rebase my Sisters on 25mm bases, so I have no idea if the same would be true if I kept the original bases. I tend to think yes, what with how the robes are sculpted so open, but I can't be sure.

Some poses also allow the torso and robes to be left off the legs... but that doesn't work for all. I've started gluing a short piece of acrylic rod to the [ahem] perineum to mount them on corks and snapping it off when I'm done.

In this blog https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/794647.page I paint a whole bunch of sisters - primarily with an airbrush, which can't reach around corners, on 32mm bases with extra stuff on the base, and I textured the bases with texture paint for good measure. And I painted the robes a slightly different green from the armor, so I had to reach into those spaces.

If you can't reach it with a brush, it'll be impossible to see on the tabletop. I'd only be slightly worried if you were planning on having robes that are a huge contrast from both the armor panels and the primer color you're using. It's certainly possible to pin the feet but IMHO not worth doing unless you're going to do really fancy stuff (like patterned cloth), which I wouldn't recommend for Sisters given how many you'd have to paint!

The only time I'm really worried about nooks and crannies that I cannot paint is if I'm priming in white and didn't use a wash. If you prime in black, even if you don't hit something that's partially obscured, it will just kind of look like a shadow anyway.

I like to pin sub assemblies to the chunky resin gates you get with forge world kits. Something like that would probably work.

Depends!

Mostly, if I cant see it, then it does not matter!

Sometimes however I can see it.
For DE wyches I wanted to paint every piece separately and glue finished pieces as a last step.
