Hi, I joined Dakka a few years ago as I was trying to get back into the hobby but life got in the way as it sometimes does. Picking up my paintbrush again now and working on a little Dark Eldar raiding force.

Have also recently discovered the joy of tabletop RPGs, got a nice little D&D group I play in these days. Hoping to try some different RPGs soon (got MÖRK BORG, eyeing up Mothership) and hopefully DM some sessions.

Last time I played 40k was 4th Edition (I started in 3rd, but my first contact was a hand-me-down 1st Edition Space Hulk), so I'm a little freaked out at how much has changed, hoping to learn some things here.

Welcome back! I started in 4th edition too. There's been a lot of good changes to the game since then but I do miss the simplicity and scattering templates. Best of luck!

Same about the templates, there's something pleasing about explosions and flamebursts being physically represented like that.

The changes I'm pleased with at a glance are AP (I never liked that all-or-nothing system) and variety in weapon damage rather than it just being 1 wound or instant death.

You may want to survey the gaming landscape of nowadays before investing in anything. GW still makes absolutely top quality models, but rules-wise their games are so far behind the competition it's not even funny. Think "Snakes&Ladders" of wargaming, they hardly moved their design mindset from the 80's.

Thanks man, I appreciate the heads up and it's noted. I did discover Wahapedia and had a cheeky skim over things on there, but I always found it difficult to really absorb rules and tell how they feel until you're actually putting them into practice.

Honestly, for me, I'm more into the painting and modeling side of the hobby, in my experience that always took up more hobby time than gaming.

I don't know how Kill Team is as a game, but I've been considering that over 40k, as I'd like to try my hand at a bunch of different factions. I'm also open to alternate rulesets, old editions... and going forward non-GW games. I tend to have a bit of a hipster impulse to not go with the biggest thing anyway and have the fortune of having a pretty open-minded group of gaming buddies to make those options viable.
