Hi folks,

Basically I'm looking for some alternative flyers for an Archaeopter. I don't mind the one GW do but I just don't want it. So I'm looking for something different.

I spent some time last night looking but I didn't really find anything much useful.

I'm looking for something 'dieselpunk', maybe something that looks more like a jet.

My trouble is I don't know much other miniature ranges or even what I'm looking for!

So if anyone can send me some links to other flyer miniatures that would be great.

Thanks all,

One and a half feet in the hobby

The Valkyrie or one of the other Imperial fliers is the first thing that comes to mind.

A modern model of a huey, chinook, hind or osprey might also be a good starting point.

The 2001 Moon Bus is an interesting boxy shuttle that does not look too out of place in 40k.

Ramshakle had a very suitable onithopter but I can't find it now.

There are these two flyers from Miniature Scenery. They're made out of MDF, if that's an issue for you.

Hey thanks, I was thinking of using a Valkyrie as a base and then mucking about with it. A Hind might be fun. Am I right in thinking 1:48 is 28mm scale?

I love those ramshackle minis, their vehicles are great.

Now that is definitely the look I'm thinking, excuse my ignorance here, is that a one piece kit or is it a sprue?

I love both of those, the top one is the right size but it's a bit too.. techy? Like clean sci fi? The bottom one is nice though.

A 1/48 Osprey is a bit bigger than a Valk so that should work fine for a Hind or Huey. A Chinook might be too big.

Generally I find 1/48 works for stuff that's big in real life like aircraft, while you want 1/35 for smaller stuff like WWII tanks.

Oh and don't forget GW terrain as an option...

Most of the middle is Zone Morales stuff.

My Hornet was made of Mantic's special "restic" plastic. It wasn't on a sprue, just a bag of loose parts. I don't know if they're HIPS now or still restic. It also didn't have instructions and it had two left tail fins instead of a left and a right. That being said, I love this kit! The detachable, opening troop carrier part is a nice touch. Also, the pricing was very nice. I'll likely pick up another some day.

I love the zeppelin, these are all some great conversions.

I too have been wanting to find an alternative / conversion for the Archaeopter, at least for the wings. Haven't got it sorted yet.

Those are all awesome, giving me some good ideas. The zeppelin is very cool.

So I think I'm thinking maybe a Hind because it's bulky and then just extending it's stubby little wings..

But if anyone has any other good chunky flyers to show off please let me know!

Another question, how big is it roughly? Is it on par with something like the archaeopter?

Hmm, I don't know how big the achaeopter is, since I've only ever seen them online. But I took some photos alongside a Valkyrie and some Skitarii. Hopefully those will help?

The Valkyrie is from my Brood Brother army. I used Guard rules. This was years before GSC plastics became a thing.

It has swap-out landing gear, in case you couldn't tell from the photo.

That troop carrier section opens up and is also removable, which would probably help with achaeopter converting.

You're welcome!

The best part? You can probably get two Hornets for the price of one Archaeopter
