Been admiring the hobby from afar, as a MTG player, and my wife was kind enough to get me an elite starter set and some paint for my birthday. Still learning how everything comes together gameplay wise and taking my time learning to paint, through YouTube tutorials. Looking forward to building an army proper. Should I be playing and learning kill team in the mean time? Currently have around 750 points each necron and space marines. I have interest in both killteam and regular 40k.

Hello!

Also there is no game store at all where I live but I know there are a few warhammer players around. Covid killed our games store

Also this game seems to be extremely obtuse to learn anything about outside of starter kit manual and wahapedia. Difficult entry experience as far as trying to figure out what to buy.

Welcome! It's great to have a supportive spouse. Youtube is a great resource which a lot of beginners choose not to (myself included, but Youtube wasn't around when I started).

If you have interest in Kill Team, and people around you play, then check it out! The new edition is an entirely separate game that will barely translate at all to 40K, though. Try the specialist games section of Dakka if you have more questions.

I feel your pain. COVID wiped out interest in most games other than 40K in my area. We're slowly creeping back.

Welcome to the hobby, I came into 40k as a MTG player too, though it was very long ago. XD

Kill Team and 40k are both fun, but they have very different rulesets, I recommend only trying to learn one at a time. Kill Team is much easier to learn and since it only needs a low model count, it's a good jumping on point.

Hopefully you live somewhere with an active scene, most of our major cities have plenty of places to play, but if you're out in the boonies somewhere, it's hit or miss.
