I want to make a space marine chapter that focuses on being brutal space knights with decaying armor and worship of the dead. However I am having trouble picking out what color scheme to go with.

The ones I had been thinking about:

The relics
  • Prime with runelord brass
  • Sponge on copper with a makeup sponge
  • Hit all the crevices with Nihilakh Oxide (possibly mix with making soda)
  • Drybrush copper
  • Coat the trim and eagle in a turquoise that is similar to the Nihilakh oxide
  • Paint in the eyes red
  • Paint weapons black
  • Cover the whole model in nuln oil gloss
  • Drybrush blood for the blood god onto weapons (including onto guns)

  • The royals
  • Prime with black
  • Zenithal a light silver onto the model
  • Paint pauldrons and eyes with shyish purple contrast
  • Paint trim and eagle retributor armor gold
  • Shade gold and purple with Druichii violet
  • Coat any remaining silver and black except for the weapon in black templar contrast.
  • Cover whole model in nuln oil gloss
  • Drybrush blood for the blood gun onto melee weapons?
  • Alternatively skip purple.

    shining lie
  • Prime with retributor armor
  • Cover the whole model in guilliman flesh (turns gold into bronze)
  • Cover pauldrons with Phoenician Purple
  • Paint weapons black
  • Shade gold and purple with Druchii Violet
  • Lightly drybrush blood for the blood gun onto melee weapons?
  • Alternative, dilute guilliman flesh so it still looks like gold. (may be too close to custodes)

    Knights
  • Prime leadbelcher steel
  • Paint pauldrons and head silver
  • Trim, eyes, and eagle gold
  • Cover in nuln oil gloss
  • Lightly dry brush silver onto the whole model.
  • Blood for the blood god the melee weapons

  • What do you think of those? Which would you pick? Any changes you would make? Anything else you would recommend?

    Are these heretics or loyalists?

Personally, I like the Relics, but I would skip that nuln oil wash towards the end.

When I was trying to decide what Chaos Legion to do, I narrowed it down to three and then did test paints on three loose models to make my final decision.

Loyaists! I really like the relics as well, I am just afraid they wouldn't look as good in reality as they do in my head ol. Would you recommend using a diffrent wash or just not using a wash at all??

Good idea! I don't have most of the paints in these schemes or any extra space marines, but its prob a good idea to get those to try them out before committing to a big project.

Well, I figure if you're using the oxide, a black wash would dull/discolor it too much and defeat the purpose.

Another suggesting; try some of your schemes on spare heads or spare arms. When I was trying to figure out how to do the skin for my DE Wracks, I glued some Zombie torsos to a big base and experimented from there.

Relics would be a strictly better scheme but you could save a lot of steps by just using an enamel or oil paint over the silver and wiping off the excess with white spirit. Then you could add a little bit of rust effects instead of verdigris. Add some artificial wear and tear and it'll be good to go.

What if I did the entire relic scheme but used a oil wash that was a mix of brown black and turquoise instead of nuln oil? It could tie the oxidization into the rest of the scheme better. Or maybe it would be best to do that before the oxidization?

I've never actualy used an oil wash before but I want to try it out. Would there be a better color mix?

You could always just do the oil / enamel wash in that verdigris color. Should watch some videos on how to do it. I personally like Marco Frisoni the most on YouTube but anyone showing off enamels or oils in that grimdark fashion would work.
