I am thinking of going to the local store to try a pick up game after several years of not playing. I have two of the necron side of the indomitus set, as well as a rulebook and a short sheet about the necron units in it. Is that enough to not be blown off the board in an average pickup game these days? I also notice this sheet doesn't have points on it, does anyone on average use power level? I don't want to walk into the FLGS completely unprepared....

I don't want the best army, just one that isn't an exercise in picking up my models by turn 3.

Impossible to tell you what the average pick up game or Pts/PL preference is at your local shop. I'm afraid you'll just have to stop in & ask them & observe.
If I were going to guess? Then I'd expect pts to be used.

Power level isn't commonly used but if you explain you're newish and what resources you have to your opponent, they'll happily walk you through it and use the same if they're a reasonable person.
As to the viability of your collection, it's hard to say, again against an opponent who is fairly casual and plays for fun you'll be fine, if it's someone wanting to use a competitive list and units to be hyper efficient it might not go so well.
In short: you will be absolutely fine as long as your opponent isn't a douche.

Honestly you'll probably need the codex. Most of the Indomitus/starter set information doesn't have the core army rules in it so you'll be playing Necrons without actually knowing what reanimation protocols does.

Indomitus has some playable units:
6 Skorpekhs
20 Warriors (hopefully Reapers)
some like the Overlord (I don't)
12 Skorpekhs and 40 Warriors + HQ would be 1000p

Indomitus comes with 3 skorpekhs, not 6, so two halves would only be 6 total

oops, I should have known this
So
4 Skorpekhs, 20 warriors, 3 Scarabs, Royal warden [500]
4 Skorpekhs, 17 warriors, 1 Reanimator, 1 Royal warden [496]
6 Skorpekhs, 10 warriors, 4 Scarabs, Skorpekh Lord [500]
or "crowded Patrol"
6 Skorpekhs, 20 warriors, 12 Scarabs, 1 Skorpekh Lord, 2 Plasmancers, 4 Cryptothralls, Plasmacyte [995]

I probably should have opened with what's in the boxes:
2 Overlord
2 Royal Warden
2 Plasmancer
2 Skorpekh Lord
6 Skorpekh Destroyers
4 Crytothralls
2 Canoptek REanimators
40 Warriors (I do plan to put reapers on these: I have an old set of warriors with flayers if need be)
12 swarms (I have the old kind from those same old warriors as well)
It sounds like it's about 1000 points, is a game still on average 2k? I might have to get the book anyways to use the other (older) models I have. I keep getting outbid on ebay for a used copy. Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh and I'm not new, I just haven't played the last edition or....maybe two...or three
I would say check my sig but it's both buried and the points are outdated. I should do a little spring cleaning and sell off what I haven't at least *tried* to build...

Warriors are in a good place, and melee destroyers are fine but with what you've currently got you will be waiting till turn 3 until you really get to any return damage.
Casual games that's not an issue but any lists focused heavily on ranged attacks could well table you.
Doomstalkers would add some high strength support, or heavy destroyers.
Otherwise you need to take a nightscythe and use strategies to move things over the board before it gets wiped.
It's not a fast army, so letting the other guy hammer you for two turns even with res protocols won't be pretty.

I can't find a codex for anything, so I am running off of the data slates from the indomitus set. I literally *can't* add anything else even if I do have it in a box somewhere. What's the point of the rules in the box set if they are completely useless to play with?
Still, what is the approximate average point value for a pick up game in your area? I do need to start there, before anything else.

Look at the Battlescribe app. That has immediate access to list building and rules. It will not substitute the codex, but it's better than nothing.
While a lot of people will WTF you for not knowing your army and not having a codex to refer to in store (The GW manager might even slap you), the most commonly played games are 500, 750, 1000, 1500 and 2000 points.
Depending on how long you want to be in the store.
I highly recommend just playing 750 points.

The one I want to to go is a nice FLGS, so I figure they won't mind me seeing if I want to actually buy back in with a codex with a casual game or two. If I do decide I want to keep playing past that, I'll just eat the $55.
I wonder how good a 1k list would go....it sounds like that would be about 2 hours and I think that's not going to kill me like the 4 hour 2000 points ones did however many editions ago.
