I've been away from gaming and modeling for some time, but the new and improved bug book brought me back.

I'm using the new book as motivation to dig into my piles of Tyranids, clean them up, and give them love.

Paint Scheme

I have a fairly simple paint scheme. Flesh tones are a sepia wash over white or bone primer.

Carapace is dark green, heavily dry brushed with dark purple, then lightly dry brushed/highlighted with bright green.

Mouths/tongues are dark red with bright red highlights. Eyes are bright red or yellow, depending on my mood and the model.

Everything except the flesh is given a gloss layer. Bases are black, with flock grass, trees, and bushes. Base rims are black.

The glossed green on purple on green gives a nice shimmery bug look to it, while still being relatively simple to paint LOTS of models.

Hormagants

Sweet sweet Hormagants. The very first models I painted were Hormagants. Since then I've updated the paint scheme several times, but I still have some of my very first models in my pile of hormies.

The sepia on white makes for a good flesh tone that works well with a wide range of carapace colors. It also goes on quickly, a plus when you are painting dozens of models.

In progress carapaces

Zoomed in look

Heavy purple drybrush

Highlighting complete! Just needs his teeth done and the gloss layer

Glossed and based. When I discovered they made wildflowers for basing I couldn't help myself.

A few buddies

More friends. The model in the center was in the first warhammer box I every bought.

Never too many bugs. 64 finished right now, with 4 more in the primer box and 6 taking a bath in acetone.

I may have gone overboard with the flowers.

I plan on adding a third squad. It is important to be able to tell units apart while playing games, but I've never liked the way painting the base rims different colors looks. My plan is to grab a box of marines to chop up for basing. That will give me a 30 bug squad with greenery on the bases, a 30 bug squad with flowers, and a 30 bug squad with mulched marines on the bases.

Marine mulch is very important to encourage proper flower growth. However, I didn't take the Tyranids for much the gardening type!
