I'd be really grateful for any tips. I have a WIP diorama that's going to feature a winged giant rat scaring a bunch of sparrows on a rooftop.

The sparrows aren't heroic scale sparrows, they're 1:72. They would fit in the palms of a Warhammer miniature's hands.

But they are very nice and have lots of varied flight poses, so I'd like to use them.

The problem is how to mount them. They're resin. I have in mind very thin plastic strands - maybe fibre optic ones from a cheap xmas decoration?
There won't be anything above for them to hang from - so I suppose they need to either stand upright from the rooftop (fixed to the bird's stomach), or curl over on themselves (fixed to the bird's back). Is there a specific product for this, or anything else you would recommend for me to try?

They make glass rods and tubes at 0.1mm. First thing to mind was fibre optic though as you mentioned.

I'd probably just use thin steel wire and paint it matte black. Something like lock wire can be found below 0.4mm and is quite strong. Hobby stores often sell "music wire" which is also commonly used when thin strands of stiff wire are needed.

If they're light enough and the flying stands are short enough that they can be mounted with fibre optics and not just droop or wobble around you could do that instead I guess.

Does it need to be transparent? Otherwise I'd suggest very light gauge guitar strings.

Awesome thanks for the suggestions. I don't have any of those things handy though and rather than order them what I did find was some 0.8mm clear plastic fishing line - like this:-
