I've just bought some Vallejo Retarder Medium, obviously with the aim of increasing the drying time on some of my paints.
I'm going to use it specifically for some of the paints that I mostly use for highlights and small detail work, especially on the lighter colours that seem to dry very quickly on the brush.
I was wondering if any body had any experience with using this product, and how many drops I should add to each pot?
I've been using Vallejo Airbrush thinner as my go-to medium for thinning paints (which is excellent), but I'm looking to increase the drying time even further.

Personally I'm not a fan. The paint stays wet for far too long, and that causes issues when I want to move on. So basically, use it sparingly.

Hmm, okay, thanks.
TBH it wouldnt matter to me too much if the drying delay is quite long, I'm thinking specifically of when I want to dot some white in the corner of an eye lens, or the final, very thin highlight on a gem, that sort of thing.

General rule of thumb is add the retarder on the palette, not the bottle. You only need a small amount to have an effect, so you can put a couple of drops on your palette and use your brush to mix a bit in when thinning. (decant some into a 17ml dropper bottle for convenience if you bought one of the bigger ones) Once you've got the hang of it and you know you always want to slow a particular colour, you should have a better feel for the ratio that fits you and that paint to put in the pot. You can do anything from 10:1 paint-to-retarder up to 1:1, though by that point it will have a significant effect on flow, opacity, binding and other properties and oils may be a better option for that task. Adding somewhere around 10% to 20% retarder is a good starter point. Personally, I mostly use flow improver instead, as it makes the paint both more 'liquid' off the brush, and has a mild retarder effect as well, which is enough for me with a wet palette. But straight retarder is definitely handy for awkward sod paints through the airbrush or when wet blending, or if you're in a tough environment (hot & dry).

Oh yeah def do it on the palette not the bottle. It thickens the paint too so be aware of that

You don't need much, and yeah, it's very thick so you'll likely need to add more thinner as you add more retarder.
I only really use it for oddball situations, things like weathering where I want to be able to slop some dirt coloured paint on then smoosh it around a bit and blend it out. Or like you say, doing very fine detail work when the paint is drying on the brush before you even get it to the model.
I just put a dab on the side of the palette and then mix a bit in when needed.

Don't put it in the bottle - it can dry out the bottle entirely.
But I would say no more than 10% does the trick. Too much and it makes the paint glossy and fragile in my experience
