I have been involved around the 40K background for a long time, but I am mostly new to 40K at 28mm and totally new to 30K. Before the current release, I was reading around and decided I wanted to go with Iron Warriors - stoic, unflinching Tactical Marines, artillery and loads of robots.....except they are now no longer stoic, artillery is missing, and I have to wait until August for robots....

So I decided to put together a core 1000 points to form the foundation of a new force, get the minimums ticked and learn the game.

Currently I have in my list ...

Rites of War - Iron Brothers
- Praetor; Cataphractii, Warsmith, Graviton crusher, combi grenade launcher
- Consul; Forge Lord, Cataphractii, Graviton maul
- Tactical squad (10) + Rhino

This is essentially fixed, as I am happy with that, and its about 500 points

So, for the second half, I need another troops squad, and I want something that can deal with armour, as I have no heavy weapons so far.

Troops options are; a second Tactical squad or an Assault squad... Both if I can!
Then.... Maybe a dreadnought as its a cool centrepiece, a Terminator squad (Tyrant Sieng might be expensive, or Cataphractii) or a Predator or Vindicator.... or a pair of Domitar!

Any thoughts or alternative suggestions?
Thanks

After further thought, this is where I am for my initial 1000 points.....

[175] HQ; Praetor Cataphractii (135) + Warsmith (+20)
+ Thunder Hammer/Graviton Crusher (+15)
+ Minor Combi-Bolter (Grenade Launcher) (+5) + Shrapnel Bolter (0)
+ Warlord Trait; Bloody Handed

[145] HQ; Centurion Cataphrachtii (85) + Forge Lord (+40)
+ Graviton Mace (0) + Shrapnel Bolter (0) + Minor Combi-Bolter (Volkite Charger) (+5)
+ Cortex controller (+15)

[155] Troops; 10x Tactical Squad (100) + Shrapnel Bolters (+20)
+ Rhino (+35)

[120] Troops; 10x Tactical Squad (100) + Shrapnel Bolters (+20)

[145] Troops; 10x Assault Squad (145)

[130] Heavy; Predator (120) + LasCannons (+10)

[120] Heavy; Vindicator (120)

.... and I still have 10 points to spend - probably on the Assault Squad Sergeant!

This gives me my required two HQ for when I extend the list to 2000 points and beyond, and gives three troops choices, including a fast squad and a transported squad (although only 10 Marines each, I may expand them when taking the list up to 2000 points) and two vehicles that pack a punch. I ended up having to decide on two out of the Predator, Vindicator and Scorpus, and I felt I had to have a Vindicator and that a Predator with two LasCannons was a better, more flexible choice.

I wanted to fit some Cataphractii in here, but aside from the armour save, they don't seem to offer a lot more for their cost. I will be taking Tyrant Siege Terminators when increasing to the 2000 points though.

Nice stuff. I too am going down the Iron Warriors route.

Maybe use the 10 points to upgrade the sergeant with Artificer armour? If so, does anyone have tips how to model this?
Do you have any plans to model the Thunder Hammer differently to refelect that it maybe a graviton crusher? I'm looking for ideals on this rather than just using a 40k Thunder Hammer

In the end, I gave the Vindicator a dozer blade (I do NOT want a short ranged tank to become a bunker!) and the Tactical Sergeant a combi grenade launcher for a blast and extra range.

I have no idea about the Graviton Crusher, but I will look through my bits box for fantasy Knight weapons that look suitably imposing I think. I want to use something that isn't a 'hammer' shape but it needs to be a blunt weapon with a haft.... maybe just a big IW skull on a long stick!

Like it! I'm going to hold back until I find something suitably cool!
