Hi everyone,

Taking the 30k plunge and ordered the starter set as well as some of those sweet heads from FW.

Absolutely zero idea how to get the most bang for the buck out of this starter set in terms of how to build the models.

I picked the night lords because of my guy Severtar (have him painted up and ready to lead), so definitely will be using him with either the terror assault or pride of the legion ROWs. But still stuck on best way to build out the termies and the marines.

I am leaning toward two full tac squads of 20 marines each, bayonets, chain glaves for the sarges, and maybe load out the termies with lightning claws, and get some contekars down the line.

Obviously have no idea what the hell im doing though so any advice welcome!

It definitely won't hurt to get chain glaives. You're also going to want to make 3 units for tacticals and get some of the FW heads to call one a Terror Squad. I would suggest some Special Weapons such as Rotor Cannons too (if you know someone who doesn't want them). I would say make 5 Lightning Claw termies and 5 power fist and combi bolters (or lightning claw but take 2 chain fists). At some point, you want Night Lord Raptors and a unit of Assault Marines. Get a Leviathan as it will be a great center piece and unit to keep a tactical squad nearby to grab objectives once it clears enemy troops. The Spartan will be great to transport your Praetor and Termies. As for more Heavy Support, you can get anything.

Thematically speaking, many 10 man tax squads would fit the Night Lords pretty well. Maybe a recon squad as well? Something sneaky and gets up the board quickly. Tactically it would also give you more board control, especially with raptors and assault marines. Just play the objective game.

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

The troops plan for my Night Lords is going to be:

2x 5-man Recon Squads (all nemesis bolters)
1x 10-man Tactical Squad
1x 10 or 11-man Breacher Squad w/ Volkite and 2 Grav

As others have stated, plan to have also have Terror Squads with Volkite and Rotor Cannons, Night Raptors with Claws and some chainblades

and lastly some termies with claws and other termies with fists/chainfists

Does anyone have a good spray paint match for Night Lords Blue?

Might want some special/heavy weapons, also could make some into terror marines. The forge world etched brass night lords stuff is nice if you can find some on ebay, help make the spartan and dreanought look the part.

In general scrounge any chains/hooks/flesh bits from aos models or dark eldar.

Do you play 30k? It'd be a lot cooler if you did.

As far as GW paints go I think the closest thing available is probably Kantor blue. I believe there may be some other paint lines that have something closer but I'm not familiar with their names.

Night Lords have a very flexible set of rules, and a broadly applying legion trait, so it can be hard to narrow down where to start.

You can do a terminator heavy, drop list with sevatar and pride. You can do a raptor heavy drop list with terror assault. Outflank infantry list with terror assault. Outflank bike list with swift blade. Leadership debuff list with curze and terror assault. Gunline with terror assault and curze. And whatever other funky combinations you can find between night fight, a talent for murder, and deepstrike/outflank.

Depending on what kind of style you want your list to be you can really go in a lot of directions. I'd advise against going too heavy on both Terror Marines and Raptors, as that sends you right into the land of too much anti infantry.
