Hello dakka! Been away from the game a while. I have 2 questions.

What are all the documents right now that have relevant rules for the guard?

How are the guard doing in this edition?

In theory, the codex, the balance dataslate and still whichever Psychic Awakening book (though I don't think GW sells that anymore, I couldn't find it at least).
In practice, nothing. New codex around the end of the year.

They got a lot of free, nonsensical rules in the Balance Dataslate, which pretty much says everything that needs to be said.

One option to get rules while waiting for new book without resorting to piracy is warhammer+. You get access to 8e book　rules and you will end up cheaper than codex nevermind supplements. So piracy or not no good reason to buy physical book now.

They announced we are the next codex and should be out relatively soon so imo just use the next couple weeks for painting and building models. Leaks will be happening soon enough so no point dropping a bunch of money and time right before our new codex

And by next you obviously meant after the Votaan.
And by relatively soon you meant Nov+.....

Winter
And its a toss up if its Guard or World Eaters first. (after squats)
There's also a small pile of AoS books first (four of them), and Slaves to Darkness around the same time (with a significant model release)

And winter 22-23 so could be early next year. But still close.

IG got auto-wounds on to-hit rolls of 6+ on ALL shooting attacks.

This change has brought them from trash tier to the dizzying heights of lower-mid tier.

As a Guard player, I've basically given up on 40k.

EDIT: As of the current meta, the only viable lists are Leman Russ spam, or the 300+ model conscript spam with Cadian Whiteshields, neither of which I play, so it's been a rather unsatisfying experience.
