Hi,

I'm in the making of a Cadians codex for a home-made ruleset based on D10.

I've come to the Cadians codex and a very high priority is to get very close to the background - closer than official codices anyway.

I have a ton of questions, but whether or not if it's a good to stay close to the background, is not one of them and will not be discussed.

First I'm interested in the structure of a Cadian army and the hierarchy of the officer ranks. This is almost only background questions, but as I'm also interested in how the background can be implemented in a codex, I felt that this thread didn't belong in the Background forum.

So here goes.

As far as I understand, infantry units and tank units do not belong in the same "lesser" formation, where a formation is a platoon, company, regiment etc. Would you agree with me?

When I say "lesser", it's because that a some point they do belong in the same formation but maybe only at "army" level.

I ask because it suits me fine, but then I came to remember back in 2. edition, a platoon was shown as having 0-3 additional units to the standard infantry squads, and a tank could be such an additional units. What do you think about that compared to the background?

Maybe I should add that for Cadia, I have chosen the officer hierarchy from the Imperial Infantryman's Uplifting Primer and I have chosen myself the formations, which I think matches the ranks best:

  • Warmaster - Theater
  • Lord General - Army Group
  • General - Army
  • Marshal - Corps
  • Lieutenant General - Division
  • Major General - Brigade
  • Colonel - Regiment
  • Lieutenant Colonel - Cohort
  • Major - Battalion
  • Captain - Company
  • Lieutenant - Platoon

To me the Chaos Space Marines needed to be characterised as a threat reaching back to the Imperium's past, a threat which had refused to lie down and become part of history. This is in part why the gods of Chaos are less pivotal in Codex Chaos; we felt that the motivations of Chaos Space Marines should remain their own, no matter how debased and vile. Though the corrupted Space Marines of the Traitor Legions make excellent champions for the gods of Chaos, they are not pawns and have their own agendas of vengeance, empire-building vindication or arcane study which gives them purpose.
