Completely new to all of this, but aos interests me. Can't decide whether to go for the extremis set or dominion? If I go for dominion which game mat and terrain would be good? Thank you.

A few questions first ; are you starting on your own or with a friend getting started too; and are you getting into a local club or store or more you and a friend at home situation?

The "best" way to get in depends a little on what kind of situation you are in and what's the best options for you.

Are you planning to play at home or local store? That matters a lot. If at flgs go for dominion and focus on miniatures.

If you plan getting terrain yourself extremis isn't bad set at all assuming you want one of the armies(and can sell rest if not interested in other). The wyldwood is good terrain to expand once you want to expand terrain.

For mat what appeals most. Avoid obvious scifi stuff and something like water and you are good to go. Maybe decide after settling on basing?

I would suggest the Dominion only because of the discounts. My FLGS has dominion on sale for $90. They have 14 boxes left. They purchased 75 so they did sell about 60with 1 box used as a demo box. As for terrain, it's pricey but try to get the big box or shoot for the WarCry terrain if anyone in your area has some for sale.

What army do you like more? Thats all that matters.

Building/painting/collecting is a serious investment of both time and money so when picking what you want to play make sure it is something you will enjoy spending a lot of time. Don't worry about complexity, ranking, or the meta just make sure you like it above all else.

Once ensconced in the warm embrace of your chosen faction you can spread out to other things.

That is definitely good point. Just for real example myself got sylvaneth army when it came as it was fairly cheap to get into.

...problem being that the playstyle for the army is so uninteractive generally(being generally bombard tons of MW's from safety or teleport, charge, kill, teleport away, rince and repeat) that it bores me to death. Still trying to come up with list that actually interests me playing more games with them...
