My partner wants to get into Kill Team. I'm thinking of getting her the starter set for Christmas (not these launch sets, the one with orks and veteran guard in). I'm also looking to see if I can source the kill zone octarius terrain box. Assuming I can is there any other books or boxes I'll need?

Best in the specialist games forum, but rules wise the best laid out source is online.

We've found the Compendium to be pretty useful.
It contains Kill Teams & rules for every* faction.

*obviously it does not include anything for Knights (they dont fit the scope of the game at all) or Votann weren't out when the book was published).

I have the starter set (not played it yet), but it looks like a good intro. The book has a bunch of tutorial scenarios starting with basic, streamlined rules and escalating to a scenario with all core rules active that is essentially a smaller version of a normal game. It makes it very accessible. The models are great too.

I recommend subscribing to WH+ for a month if you want to REDACTED some of the faction rules from White Dwarf backissues.

You don't need anything besides the starter to get started, nope. However, if you want faction rules for other bespoke teams, you would need the appropriate campaign books (Chalnath book for Tau Pathfinders & SoB Neophytes, Nachmund book for CSM & Eldar Corsairs, Moroch book for Traitor guard & Phobsmarines, etc). Campaign books also contain new missions; the Moroch book even introduces a new playmode, Sentries. Campaign book missions have fixed terrain layouts, but if you already have existing terrain, you can proxy it with anything you have on hand.

Compendium might be worth looking into if you already have 40K model collections, but Compendium teams are not "proper" killteams IMHO

Starter sets are actually fantastic for terrain gubbinz and rulebooks and widgets. Well worth a punt - I've bought 2 if octarius and one of into the dark.

Compendium is very useful and the gw faq. Beyond that just the rulebook and doods.

Great game. We're loving it at the moment.

Scenery. It's on you as to what type and your style of play.

Other then that, you can use the online rules to get your feet wet, then upgrade on your faction with a compendium, or the box set.

The starter boxes are not necessary, but they are the best deal across the board. You can do better on prices local, and on FeeEBay.
