Basically what it says on the tin. I just happened to have a project line up with a new playlist so was able to see almost exactly (+/- 5 minutes depending on my rounding) how long it takes for me to paint some models. Turns out 5 models at a tabletop standard took me 879 minutes, or 14.65 hours to do, noting that due to an allergy to some propellant or other in varnish I have to hand brush it on (and thus I count it as painting).

Its something I've been curious on for awhile, so rather interesting to be able to get it pretty much mathed out, as depending on how busy I am, a project can span a full month or more. Now I can at least mentally math out the *actual* time it takes to do a project instead of the *feel* of how long it takes.

I can get a Chaos marine done in about 45 minutes. More like an hour and a half if I really feel like putting in the extra effort.

A lot depends on the project.

I can probably do a pair of termagaunts in an hour, spread over a day. But they are 90% contrast, with just a couple touch ups after that. Little before work, 3x15 min break segments (which are probably closet to 10m) and some finish time after work.

My marines take a lot more steps, mostly due to different levels of detail, but I also ink and highlight them. My nominal goal is one a week, with the time spread out. I have no idea how much time hand on brush they take. I try to sit down once a day, put at least one layer down. Repeat until finished.

The Snowtroopers I'm painting at the moment take about four hours each, and I figure that's not atypical for most infantry models I paint. I'd probably call that tabletop standard, although there is not a lot of difference between that and my best work. I prefer to err on the side of quality even for troops with only a bit of speeding up where I think I can get away with it. Also because painting uniform troops over and over again gets dull and I'd like to get it over with. As a result I get a Legion squad done every month or two, both because of the individual time it takes to paint the models and to break up the monotony with the odd different project.

Depends a lot on the model and how many corners I cut to do it quickly.

Night Goblins were about 15 minutes each.

My Nights Watch models I was getting done in about 20-30 minutes each, but that's because it's mostly layered drybrushing.

Hormagaunts take me about 40 minutes.

Those are all what I'd describe as speed painted.

My Aeronautica models in many ways are simpler to paint, but I spend more time getting them to look nice, so probably about 2 to 3 hours per model.

My Skaven Blood Bowl team was about 2 to 3 hours per model.

Space Hulk Termies about 4-5 hours per model.

So it's a mix of how much effort I want to put in and how complicated the model is to paint. Orks are terrible because they're actually quite complex to paint, but you have tons of them to paint.

Some people, the longer they spend in the hobby the more impressive their paint jobs, I've gone the opposite way, the longer I've spent in the hobby the more I appreciate a fast paint job that gets the models on the table ASAP

When I first started playing I could knock out an orc or a cadian in half an hour. Since then I've raised my standards a bit. A human equivalent will take me 2-4 hours. If I assembly line paint I can knock a half hour off that but I'll do 10-20 at the same time. My preferred painting method now is with a wet palette, which takes me 5+ hours to finish one model.

A long time.
My speed painting is over an hour per figure.
And everything else is a minimum 5 hours for a man sized model, and up to around 30.
That said, I still manage to paint around 100 or models a year. But I don’t watch much tv or do much of anything in my spare time besides paint miniatures.

Ahhh... good question?

I'm doing good to spend an hour a week painting anymore. But I still manage to finish... 20 minis a year? Maybe 30? Haven't really been keeping track the past several years.

They're not super-detail smooth color blends or any thing, but they're (mostly) not speedpainted either.

Purely time spend painting? When i'm not painting Minis, i paint on canvas or paper - so all becomes one, really. There's no real cut, hence it is difficult to pin down the amount of time i paint every day.

I'd say maybe half and hour a day, and it probably takes weeks or months to finish a mini. So.. 10 hours per mini, maybe?

Depends on the detail of the model, but for human size, anywhere between 1.5-3 hours per.

Usually takes me a week or two to paint a squad of something, depending what other obligations I have going on outside of work.

It's a giant mystery, right? You can't really count assembly time, but you should count priming. You can't count waiting for paint to dry.

I'm a hacky speed painter, so I'd guess I spend maybe an hour or so per infantry model. that's obviously when I'm batch painting and not counting down time.

Ages. Probably 1-2 weeks for a single space marine sized model, 4-6 weeks for a primarch or larger character. That's painting an hour or 2 per night. At the moment I have more painting time but I'm not making the most of it due to being a little uninspired.

I also have an unfinished Daemon Magnus that's probably had about 50 hours on it so far.

Yeah, it takes me a hell of a long time to paint to my current highest standard, It doesn't help that I'm naturally the kind of person who takes their time about things in general.

I've got quicker in the last couple of years though. I could knock out a high-ish tabletop level mini in 3 hours or so if I put my mind to it, which I'm quite pleased about. I used to spend days just wondering what paint scheme to use

It still takes me forever if it's a mini that I consider to be important though...

Depends a lot on the model and how far I want to go with it in general.

That said, since I switched to oils, I'm about 3x faster/more efficient. I usually sit for about 3 hour sessions these days, and get anywhere between 2-6 "human sized" models done, and to a higher standard than my acrylic works (which were probably 3 hours for 1-3 models, depending).

Depends if I'm painting for commissions or if I'm doing a competition. Knowing if I'm going to sell the model or not force's me into a time span. I'll spend 4-6 hours on a commission and it can be upwards of 20 hours on a model if it's a competition. Of that, usually I'll do 2-5 hours at a time. So I tend to just throw on some lofi and let it run.

With contrasts jest a few (~15) minutes per model. Most of my troops are done like that nowadays.

I’m a slow painter and always looking for ways to get good results quicker

Main reasons I’m slow

I’m still learning how to achieve the look I want, especially with flesh

I’m too critical of my self and try and overacheive

I get focused one one model or part of a model instead of painting in a more structured fashion

I want my models to look good about 6 inches from my nose

Slow painter. Not very good either really.
Compared to a lot you see.

So it probably equates to 3 hours for basic models of an average standard.

Finding time to paint is the tricky part with kids/life etc.
So it’s been months since I picked up a brush really.

Too long, I acquire minis far faster than I paint them.

Not sure exactly how long in hours, but a week for a reasonable sized batch of minis (10 28mm - 24 15mm). Trying contrast style speed painting in an effort to get more painted.

This is so subjective for me. It depends on the model and how motivated I am. I can gleefully bang out 20 metal Plague Bearers in an afternoon or I can spend 8 hours on a single Hero miniature, struggling the whole time as I break it out over several evenings.

Motivation is the big key.
Definitely goes slower (or not at all) when I’m not feeling it as much.
