Hi all, I am recently back to the hobby after a 20 year break!

I have joined a local club and been playing for a few weeks now building a 1k list for smaller game played on limited time evenings.

The games use the Nephilim rules and are friendly / casual with view to helping players to learn and build to a competitive level.

I am playing with Dark angels, after few weeks have been tweaking list to create a 1k army capable of holding its own against various armies, orks, nids, death guard, necrons etc.. have varying levels of success so far so hoping for some help to refine and improve list.

Current list below, would appreciate any suggested tweaks.

1k points - 4/6 CP remaining

HQ

Interrogator chaplain - master of sanc = mantra of str / canticle of hate - wise orator - teeth of terra (-2cp - 135 points)

TROOPS

x5 Intercessors - Auto bolt rifle (100 points)

x5 tactical squad - heavy weapon = Missile launcher (105 points)

ELITES

Deathwing command squad - TH /SS sgt & x2LC Terminator (80 points)

FAST ATTACK

x5 Assault Marines with Jetpack - x2 pistol & chainsword - x1 plasma pistol & chain sword - x1 flamer Sgt Plasma pistol & chainsword (95 Points)

x3 Outriders (165 Points)

HEAVY SUPPORT

x5 Hellblasters - assault plasma incinerator (165 points)

FLYER

Stormtalon - Twin assault cannon x2 Lascannons (185 points)

General play style, use the flyer to get in behind and focus soft targets + lascannons on armor

Chaplain goes into deep strike with assault marines squad, drop them in turn 2/3 where needed and to react to opponent deployments, use of commanding oratory for +2 charge aura for assault squad for charge from deep strike.

Command squad I leave on home objective and support with flyer + outriders if needed.

Hellblasters and troops I use to roam and take objectives / kill enemy units.

Any suggestions be very welcome as find it hard to build lists at 1k, hate leaving out deathwing but just take up too many points imo at 1k level.

I have various options can also use

- librarian / 15 intercessors / assault inceptors / x3 dreadnoughts with fist & multi melta / x2 predator annihilators / numerous tactical squads with heavy and special weapon options / devastator squad with all heavy options / talonmaster / ravenwing apothecary on bike / 20 terminators / x10 reviers / captain with combi melta / land speeder tornando multi melta+ flamer / x2 rhinos / x1 whirlwind

Welcome, glad you're back in the hobby.

It *is* hard to build lists at the 1k level. But we can take a look anyway. Question for you: are you open to new units/purchases, or would you rather stick to what you have?

On to the list:

Looks like you're going for a single patrol. So you need only 1 Troops choice. I would probably go ahead and drop your second choice here. Troops in general don't tend to provide all that much, and you can save points for more elite units.

So I would probably keep your Intercessors, swap them to the Rapid-Fire bolt rifle since it will be the most versatile option, and drop your tactical squad. The bolters aren't super useful, so realistically you're only getting a missile launcher and some bodies for 105 points, not a great deal.

Assault marines are good and cheap. Vanguard veterans are much better for a combat unit. Most of the time you use a unit like assault marines to help you score some secondary points, and they're really good for that role. However it seems like you want to use them as a direct combat option, and for that I would strongly recommend a switch to Vanguard veterans. They're more expensive, but I think we can make it work.

Outriders are another unit that I love but also they're not so impressive most of the time. They look super cool, and that can't be denied. I tend to find they bounce off their targets a lot though. Still, its always good to have a fast unit, and they're reasonably tough for the points cost. Keep them if you want, but I would say watch their performance and see if you are happy with them. There's a small mistake on your write-up. A squad of 3 Outriders costs 135 points. You wrote 165, but I checked your total and it looks like 135 is what you actually paid, so no real mistake other than what you have printed.

Hellblasters are fun but ... yikes. I consider this very brave. Typically you overcharge your plasma for the damage output. Overcharging 3 shot plasma weapons with no Captain for rerolls is asking for trouble. You're probably as dangerous to yourself as you are to the enemy. Now you don't *have* to overcharge of course, but you're losing a lot of their potential if you don't. Even if you could squeeze in a dreadnaught to babysit this squad and use Wisdom of the Ancients, that would help.

Flyer is kind of fun. I have a hard time seeing it as not being very outclassed by the Storm Speeder Thunderstrike though, which has better weapons, a BS of 2+, and is cheaper. Not a bad pick if you want to stick with what you have, but I'm afraid it's pretty much been replaced.

So I'd probably:

Swap intercessor weapons to Rapid Fire bolt rilfes (+0)
Remove tactical squad (+105)
Remove Outriders (+135)
Remove Assault Marines (+95)

Add 5 Vanguard Veterans with storm sheild/lightning claw (-150)
Add dreadnaught with fist/melta (-125)

This puts you 60 points under. Could add a couple more vanguard veterans if you wanted, or something else. You could then choose to drop the storm talon and replace with a Thunderstrike, which would save you another small amount of points, or keep it as is.

Best of luck to you.

Point of order: Dark Angels can't take Vanguard Veterans. I wish they could, they'd be amazing, but they can't sadly.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

correct, we cannot take vanguard or sternguard, we get company veterans instead which are a completely different horse.

2 man dwcs with th/ss to bodyguard the interrogator just isnt sufficient, i would spend the point here for more terminators which would serve as a welcome substitute.

the storm talon is interesting but honestly will probably proove to be under whelming. if your gonna take this to tabletop simulator consider replacing it with an eliminator and eradicator squad, this gives you good footslot anti tank that moves at the speed of the rest of your army, it gives you sniper which are just awesome at killing while camping a backline objective which i suspect was what the tactical marines would have otherwise been doing. and their damage output is insane

eliminators are capable of working miracles and their just so efficient
