Hello. I before I start with question I’m pretty sure that you cannot have more than one + or - to the same thing. i.e. +2 to hit or -2 to wound. But you could have a +1 to Toughness and -1 to wound

Now getting to my question
Benediction of darkness provided light cover which grants +1 to range saving throws but not to invulnerable saves. Is this better, sane or weaker than -1 to wound a unit like black rune of damnation.
The next question would be how strong if combined so -1 to wound the unit first and then +1 to normal saves vs range attacks.

I am only asking for range input as we all know -1 to wound vs both is better than only range. But if we are specifically talking about range protection

generally, improvements to rolls earlier in the kill chain have greater effects, as a modifier to wound reduces the number of successful wounds, and thus armour saves that need to be made.

also, wound mods can significantly reduce the effectiveness of high strength weapons, which are one of the standard counter marine options.

So, generally speaking, a -1 to wound gives greater protection than +1 to saves

To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be relearned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods.

-1 to wound is one of the best defensive buffs you can get in the game. Cover can be completely negated by high AP and AP can often easily be buffed. -1 to hit is good too, but re-rolls and hit buffs are relatively common. Wound buffs aren't as common and -1 to wound will pretty much always do something for a unit's survivability.

Also, small note on the stacking of modifiers: the maximum end result of all modifiers is capped at +/-1 but stacking modifiers can help to mitigate opponent's own modifiers. So having -2 to wound can sometimes be useful if your opponent ahs ways to get +1 to wound, for example.
