Note before: like all my P&M blogs, this will be a slow burn with infrequent updates.

I've been reviewing my Orks since building my Kill Team Kommandos (painting in progress). The models are quite battered and need a lot of TLC. The core of the force is three sets of the Black Reach 5th edition starter set Ork force (Warboss, 5 Nobs, 20 Slugga boyz, 3 Dethkoptas), with an extra 11 boyz assembled as Shoota boyz with a Nob, 10 Burna boyz with two of them Meks with Kustom mega blastas, and 3 old metal Killa kanz. Also an old metal Ghazghkull I use as a mega-armoured Warboss. Add to that my 10 Kommandos.

I want to turn this into a basic Ork force using the 3rd edition Ork codex (because it is fun and I like playing with lists with unit restrictions) that I can then face off against my 3.5th edition Armageddon Imperial Guard forces. At some point, I would like to expand to have a Speed Freaks branch (technically, Dethkoptas are only available to Speed Freaks in 3rd edition) and a Feral Orks branch. My models will be repaired, rebased onto 32mm bases (for boyz and nobz), and some of the models converted and reorganised. The core will be a Freebooterz force fighting primarily in the Death Mire region (which is where they will pick up the feral ladz living in the nearby equatorial jungle and the surrounding swamps).

The 3rd edition Ork codex has Burna boyz and Tankbustas as 0-2 troops, but with more limited special weapons than later incarnations (4 burnas or three rokkit launchas respectively, plus whatever the character takes). The 10 Burna boyz divide into two small 5 Ork mobs lead by a Mek each. However, some Tankbustas seemed like a good idea to face off against my massed Steel Legion Chimeras. A couple of my Shoota boyz had tankbusta bombz modelled on that are not supported in any rules incarnation of this time period, so a bit of chopping and modelling later and one was now carrying a rokkit launcha and the other a choppa to fill out the tax Ork. A spare Black Reach nob was given a rokkit launcha (selected as an armoury upgrade), and I made a bosspole from bits of tank parts as trophies from previous kills. My Shoota boyz rokkit launcha and the launcha from my Kommandos (not being used as a Kommando in my list due to 3rd ed Kommandos only having 1 special weapon option). That rounds out a small 5 Ork-strong anti-tank team to hunt Chimeras.

Close up on the Nob, I converted an aiming visor from a Sentinel viewport armour plate.

Ambushing an unlucky Chimera.
