I’m pretty happy with how the middle but turned out, but the outer part looks a bit naff. Awful photo I know but here’s what I’m talking about:

I followed these steps:

Khorne red
Smaller Mephiston red
Orange dot
Smaller yellow dot
White dot

There are two tricks to OSL.

1) You have to paint the mini - or at the very least, the area of the mini being lit - significantly darker than you ordinarily would to make the OSL stand out more.

2) You get best results using glazes over the existing color, rather than layering.

When I'm painting red eyes that I want to shine, I'll paint them a base red, then the highlights will be super thin (like glaze thin) and work up to almost pink. Then add a dot of white. I also agree with Vulcan that a darker face helps too. So I usually try to do a black wash just around the eyes/goggles before highlighting to give them that shadow.

I'm not a great painter but here's my method in practice on the grot to the right:

@Vulcan: since it’s a white gas mask, I guess going off your first point, maybe it’s a bad idea… Maybe I’ll repaint it with metallic rims and try glazing next time

@makeitorky those grots look great, but yeah I see what you both mean about starting darker
