So I am onto the fifth episode and having read the novel I am a little unsure if this is a retcon or an elaborate
misdirect.

Spoiler:
So in the book Nynaeve was a child who was taken in by the Sylvaneth after her village was attacked by Nurgle. She then became a champion of Allarielle before Sigmar claimed
her. So the conflict is that Sigmar didn’t save her, that was Allarielle and he only took her as a soul thief because she became something useful to his cause.

In the show, Nyaeve is a chaos warrior who was at some point claimed by Sigmar. The focus being on how all these valiant and good heroes were not saved by Sigmar whilst she, their murderer; was. This implies the God King is immoral and Machiavellian.

So the themes are broadly the same. But the difference is that Nyaeve herself is still a hero chosen by a God. Little orphan girl gets given powers by a Goddess. Pretty idealistic. Whereas making her a monster does challenge the heroes view of herself as a hero. It’s also cool that you have an Order vs Order conflict.

Now, I am not sure about this. I don’t see how the Chaos Gods can’t claim their followers and more
to the point why would Sigmar want a clearly unrepentant Chaos tainted soul. The instances we see they make that decision. So I just think there’s too many reasons not to select that soul even if you could prune away what you did not want. Also, Sigmar does take worthy souls so it’s at odds with what we know.

I am not sure if this is a half truth Nurgle is doing to try and corrupt Nyaeve. For example it’s odd to introduce just such a peaceful village in Ghyran like from the book and the main villain having a daughter with raven hair by the apple tree which is a recurring motif. It could be that actually she buried her mothers axe into that chaos warrior and that’s when the Sylvaneth or Sigmar took her. Maybe Hendrick is the Chaos Warrior and has
some sinister agenda which is why he is killing Nyaeve.

What do you all think? Is this just a retcon of the book?

I also noticed this plot issue, I am glad I am not the only one. It has me concerned for a potential ret con (I hate retcons) but I am willing to hold out before passing judgement. The Chaos spirit saying "I cannot lie" while wearing a completely different visage to its own seems like a big red flag.

Road to Renown! It's like classic Path to Glory, but repaired, remastered, expanded! https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/778170.page

I chose an avatar I feel best represents the quality of my post history.

I try to view Warhammer as more of a toolbox with examples than fully complete games.
