I've been playing AoS now for a bit and am deciding to try 40k since it's the more popular of the 2. I love me some nurgle but play skaven in AoS.

At the moment it seems Death Guard are a lil bad, maybe, I'm not sure? I have a few questions about units. I'm not looking to be super competitive but also don't want to be tabled super early either.

Anyways:

1. I want to save money, so with poxwalkers from the combat patrol box, would it be an idea to put them on a bigger base in groups and run them as nurglings?

2. Would a land raider be worth it for survivability?

3. If I do have a land raider. Would having a helbrute and maybe a hauler be okay for anti-tank?

4. Is there anything I should know so I don't make any silly obvious mistakes?

Thanks in advance, stay sickening

1. No. You want a huge group of poxwalkers with Typhus, and you want Typhus. If you want to save money, use some of the poxwalkers as cultists. You will want cultists, because they can infect objectives.

2. no. A DG army vehicle wise should start with 2-3 artilery pices and then have mortarion parked near them to form a indirect shoting battery.

3. No. LR anti tank per cost ratio is not that good and dreads die too fast AND cost too much for the few shots they have. DG tank comes in form of their indirect artilery tanks buffed up by characters, crucialy Mortarion.

4. Don't buy regular termintors, take shrouds and even then maybe one unit. DG terminators aren't very good right now, they were good in prior edition.
Cultists are great they are cheap, they infect objectives and are fast or at least fast as far as DG goes, poxwalker+Typhous are good.

Depending on how good armies your opponents run, the number of Plague marines in your DG army drops. If they play votan or something similar you probably can get away running a unit of 5, maybe 2x5. but if they play a mid tier army, the DG player can't afford to run them.

If you have to kill, then kill in the best manner. If you slaughter, then slaughter in the best manner. Let one of you sharpen his knife so his animal feels no pain.

Nurglings aren't part of the DG in 40K, they're Nurgle Daemons which you could ally, but I'd suggest to start with one army instead of two .
The Death Guard roster is pretty small right now, Plague Marines, Terminators, some of the support characters and Zombies are always a good start. Karols advice comes from a hypercompetitive background, the best advice for any army usually is: buy what you think looks cool. DG is a very tough army to paint (imo), so you should keep that in mind before buying 30 Plague Marines. So starting with the units you like is good. If you rather want a Land Raider than Mortarion as your first centerpiece model then go for it.

For Cultists I'd suggest looking for other models than GW if that's an option. The GW Cultist models are overpriced monopose rubbish that don’t look anything like Nurgle.

having played a grand total of two games, and through much more luck than by judgement managed to win both..

1. poxwalkers are good at being annoying, and taking more effort to kill than they are worth, they can also surprise you in melee if they manage to get there. Note "can" not "will", but for 60 points a few blocks of ten are quite nice to basically provide units that have to be dealt with as a distraction

2. plague marines.. ahh plague marines, I have found units of ten are "ok", they are just robust enough that ten will survive being shot at by fire that will kill five and could kill seven, again they won't live overly long but they will soak some shooting, and with the way they have 'lethal hits' and double shot bolt guns can be irritating, again don't expect too much from them though

3. terminators, how good they are comes down to a simple question "can you roll a 4+?" mine died outright in a game, with a Lord of Virulence dropping with them by failing every single save. was quite funny though. main problem with them is they quickly become the "that unit needs to die" target and depend on deep strike & making a charge roll

Seems to my (limited) games that the DG are not all that bad, they are just very different to what they have previously been, dropping enemy toughness by one is quite nice and the strategem to boost the SP of weapons works nicely with it to focus on one thing. plus the various plague spewers are quite good

the Plague Burst Crawler is ok, Land Raider.. comes down to what you want it for, is ok, its overpriced (as with most of the army) but here you pay for transport capability you may not need, if you just want the lascannons get a predator but don't expect it to live long

I think you also need to be, and plan to be, very aggressive, you won't win a ranged duel against most armies, you can hurt as you close then use melee though but it is critical to play the mission and keep your opponent reacting to you not doing what they want to.

pick your targets carefully, my focus tends to be on the enemies mobile units like bikes, fast skimmers etc as while you have sticky objectives they can be taken from you by a fast moving enemy if not sat on

but with everything, pick models you like, rules can and do change

Karol is correct.

Frankly death guard are very bad at the moment. So bad they don't even get played in large tournaments, much less place.

If you play death guard play against, sisters, votan, maybe grey knights might be fun. But even admech will stomp you so just watch out. Sometimes against a bad or inexperienced player you can sneak out a win, but death guard are fighting over lowist win % in tenth with a few other armys.

He didnt ask to have a tournament army, he likes Death gaurd and want to have some help picking the units that will be oke.
I would say patrole box is good for stating the army you can use the poxwalkers for cultist or go for a other compagnie if you dont play in the tournaments. from that take units you like the look of, its always better to paint units you like then units you should have. and depending on your income you can expand the army. Typhus with some special deatgaurd terminators in deepstrike can do a lot of dammage. play against nice poeple dont play tournament players and you will have fun, but you will lose a lot even with my world eaters i lose a lot
