Question: is it possible for Khorne berserkers to blood surge if they’re already in engagement range?

Explanation: The rules don’t say you can’t. It just says you have to lose a model to shooting, and that you need to end the blood surge as close as possible, up to your roll.

My berserkers were in melee with a repulser that shot and killed some of them. So I rolled blood surge and moved them closer, as if piling in or consolidating. I only moved models that could get closer, because I was not in base to base but I was already in engagement range. The extra movement was enough to get another unit into combat because the other unit was just behind the tank.

Same thing could apply to enemies shooting my berserkers in melee with pistols, or other vehicles I end up in engagement range with. The rule specifies that you can’t be battleshocked, but it doesn’t say it only works when you’re not in engagement range.

I see nothing to invalidate your analysis.

I do note that doing so will require you to move your unit into BTB, assuming you are on the same plane as the closest enemy unit. 1” of movement will allow you to get into BTB from less than 1” away.

Exactly my thinking. I get up to 1” with the guys in front. The guys further behind can go further, depending on my roll, and depending on their position. But in certain situations it will allow me to get more guys into melee by the time I’m done piling in. For example, if a 3” pile in isn’t enough, blood surging before piling in will give my models extra distance.

It just felt a little…unintended and unregulated. But RAW seemed okay with it.

If they didn't want it to work while in Engagement Range nor allow it to make a virtual charge they would have made it a Normal Move.

Cool. New horde Nids have the same wording I believe.

I’m correct in thinking that it doesn’t count as a charge, correct? No +1S, no +1A, and no fights first. Just a casual stroll into engagement range.

Correct. Charges happened during the Charge Phase nor does Blood Surge state it gives the unit the Benefits of a Charge.

Okay, another question. The blood surge rule says the unit “can” make a blood surge roll. Does this mean I can choose not to do it? I was shot by overwatch while 5” from the enemy and blood surged into engagement range and lost my charge bonus. Could I have chosen not to roll blood surge? Likewise, if my unit is in cover and a blood surge will likely move them into open ground, I can opt out of doing it?

Can means can. Optlonal. Not mandatory,

But if you surge has to end as close as possible.
