Video link that popped up in my recommended.

I know little about it, but I used to watch MWG, and the game looks neat at first glance. Not $1,000 to get all the minis neat, but neat.

I enjoyed Matt's theoretical videos on game design but there was not a lot about the end product

I know he leaned heavily on Star Wars Legion and it looks to me the game is similarly "proprietary" with bespoke stat cards for official minis etc and I'm not interested in something that inflexible at this time.

I would be a lot more interested if the models weren't "non-GW" alternatives for 40k. Unsure of their reasoning, but as a customer it comes off as lack of faith in their own system so they have the fallback to sell the product as knockoffs should the game flop.

I watched the videos, backed it, and even joined the play testing discord server. I think it’s safe to say that I really dig what they’re trying to do with their ruleset.

Though it may look like a 40K ripoff on the surface, the rules have very little in common with it. It’s more like Mantic’s Firefight, Star Wars Legion, or even Bolt Action. The focus is on smooth and quick gameplay with a little rules overhears as possible. Also, token-pull unit activations! Ten-sided dice! No rerolls And no templates!

Also, FYI, I think only the chaos-y faction was meant to be a 40K 1:1 substitution. The other two factions models aren’t designed to represent any existing 40K ones (though it’s understandable why people might think this).

Aside from the very silly tank and the integrated smoke on the jetpack troops, the minis look nice enough.

I mean, they may play differently due to the different ruleset, but the miniature designs are very clearly supposed to be 40K analogues.

My god those models are insanely busy, the not chaos marines are very offputting to even think about casually painting them up!

MWG have been heavily reliant on GW for quite some time, to the point when they have tried to play other games, their numbers of views/clocks have not been great.

Safe to say, this is the same currently.

It's a bit too much to invest in anything outside of GW for most players. Finding a player of ravaged star would be a nightmare for me locally I am sure, and if/when it does flop like most outside of GW games do, the models/rules will hold little to no value.

I am not too keen on the models either, they are a bit too cartoon/comic book style for me, which was probably the design ethos for them, but I'm not a fan.

I wish them the best of luck but I am pessimistic. Additionally, I wonder if they will fall foul of GW - not copyright side but have their free products/upcoming release/influencer perks stripped.

On a side note MWG have always been a tad weird, whilst completely anecdotal and probably in contrast to the content that pulls for them, I used to enjoy the big project vlogs like when they built the hive world gates/train table etc and that has completely gone, as well as their high staff turnover.

Surprised they went this route since they had a more original sci fi setting wargame they created about 10 years back called Dark Potential. Could have used all there new digital ability to do a updated version of that war game 🤷🏻‍♂️

I joined the play testing Discord group for this and have played a few games. It’s already really fun even though the rules are still in beta. If you like the concept of Warhammer 40K but are tired of its outdated mechanics (IMO) and rules bloat, then this is a great alternative. It might look like 40K, but it plays much more like a cross between Bolt Action and Star Wars Legion.

If you don’t like the models, then that’s fine. I’m sure they will release new factions in the future. But I think it’s worth at least keeping an eye on it because I think the rules are going to be popular with people looking for a 40K replacement.

If this is more detailed but still rather convenient to play as OPR I could see me give it a try becauseI trust Matt to do some awesome stuff. But I'd use my existing Chaos minis.

Concerning MWG I'm a vault member since a couple of years but I feel that their narrative campaigns which as they stated always created peaks in reaching new viewers have been getting rare during the last 2 or 3 years. Which is a shame because watching Luka and Steve play the 500th boring matched play game is not what I signed up for.
