wanted to highlight the legion's use of apothecaries, but wondered if three in a list would be more competitive leaning.

It kinda depends.

Apothecaries are valuable but by and large you can’t stick them where they get the most bang, that being terminators and command squads. In a WE army you’re either sticking them with despoilers or rampagers. In the first case they’re still just despoilers, so while kinda dangerous they’re far from a problem solving / deathstar unit. And while rampagers are an incredibly nasty beat stick they’re still just rocking a 3+ and fairly expensive per model (not to mention a lot of their lethality comes from HQ support, specifically a chaplain).

So in the end I’d say no, that it does
Improve the units but doesn’t make them unstoppable or insanely efficient by any means.

Yikes, if people consider 3 apoths competitive, I must be a right witch, as I regularly run 4!

I don't see apothecaries as being overly nasty. They provide a valuable service, and in the right circumstances can make a squad a bastard to shift, but I wouldn't call them competitive by any means.

I don't see a problem with adding them to any Legion - one of the great features of HH armies is the flexibility you have in theming your army. Apothecaries give units a bit if extra staying power - I have one with my Grey Stalkers and another on a bike with my Sky Hunters (it won't do much, given how fragile they are). With all their extra gear, they can also add some visual interest to your units.

Build a man a fire, and he'll be warm for a day. Set a man on fire, and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.

How is that overly competitive?
Also how are you surviving the sniper gauntlet?

GW:"Space marines got too many options to balance, therefore we decided to legends HH units."
Players: "why?!? Now we finally got decent plastic kits and you cut them?"
Chaos marines players: "Since when are Daemonengines 30k models and why do i have NO droppods now?"
GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"
Chaos players: Guess i stop playing or go to HH.

Thanks all for the insight. Sounds like 3 is fine.

I was just going by battle-reports i've seen tbh, they seemed quite impactful.

They are, but specifically in their best-case scenarios.

An apothecary in a unit of rampagers - or similar 2w PA elite unit - quickly makes its points back due to the cost of the models they’re saving. Likewise they’re of great use when hunkered down in an objective camping unit with HotL.

However I’m both cases they’re far from uncounterably op. As mentioned snipers take them out fast, and they’re useless if someone points the big guns at your elite unit (which they’re likely going to do).
