note sure exactly what the purpose of the "Epic" scale range is

the books for HC, P&S and BP all already cover playing at reduced scales like 2mm, 6mm & 15mm and it works fine

the new models are ok, the lack of a 40mm base width option makes them harder to use in other games though

and if the rules are anything like the ones they did for BP (ACW) you would be far better off playing the actual HC rules

Ther point is to have everything together in one.

Also smaller scale in plastic.

to have small scale plastic models so people don't need to go to other companies to get those

the rules don't really change for the 15mm models it is just more models per base (but models are a good source for other games)

there is an issue though. take the ACW version. measurements go to cm from inches, makes perfect sense, scales really easily and no real rules changes to do it. thumbs up

except unit frontages are physically unchanged. what was say 240mm wide in 28mm is still 250mm wide in this scale, which looks amazing, no doubt, however the leaders command ranges are now a lot less in relation to unit sizes.

which is 100% avoided if you do what the basic game books suggest and also scale down the unit frontages

the models are very nice, and 10-15mm is a much better scale for these rule sets on a normal table size, can start to bring a nice sized army and the game works well. you just need to largely ignore the rules in the "epic" range and use the normal rules and add ons

It is all about the models and BP being a Sandbox meaning you are supposed to change it to your liking, and the Epic rules are an example of that

Yet the main problem are the stripes which makes it almost impossible to play at a different scale than 18-24cm unit frontage and therefore needs the same 6x4 to 8x4 table
It just looks more impressive

The other problem is that we don't get other armies but just those for the single battle, combined with a proprietary scale, it is not really appealing

As someone newer to historicals, this is going to be a rad gateway into the era. My opponent and I will have available product, models that match one another in scale and quality, rules that are likely passable but not too crunchy, all from a company that will probably not be going away anytime soon. We're in.

I was going to get into Hail Caesar 2nd edition (but then TOW happened...) and found that for less than $150 I picked up enough Gaul and Roman 1/72 minis to last a lifetime. That being said, smaller scale = more minis = closer to realism for numbers. Though the REALLY tiny scale can't be beaten for that, 2mm isn't it?

Can you even tell what you're looking at when the figures are 2mm?

It's a new time period for Warlord. AFAIK, their 25mm figure collection doesn't include any figures for the Punic Wars. So this won't directly compete with the figure lines that they already have available.

While I like the look of both sides in this conflict, the prospect of painting decent numbers of them in 28mm certainly was an obstacle. Haven't looked closely at the previous small minis WG made due to a lack of interest in those periods, I recall they appeared rather good, so looking forward to seeing these too.

I'd've said 6mm would probably be more suitable, and there are quite a few ranges at that scale - see Baccus 6mm for one example.

6mm works very well, have Napoleonic models on 40mm wide bases (40x20 actually) based up for DBN, easily works for BP as well

the Warlord range are interesting as the unit frontage really matters, and thats what makes the width of their bases a pain.

e.g. a Tiny unit is 40mm, a small one is 80mm (two bases) a regular one is four bases and a large one is six bases. this is with measurement in inches still (though its better at that point to swap movement and weapons to cm, but leave command in inches)

you can of course use one base, two bases, three bases and four bases for tiny, small, regular and large - where the 60mm is a bit more reasonable)

but you don't want wider than four bases, which then brings in a further issue of OCD with the unit commander not being centred

2mm works, but you are adding labels to unit bases and at that point may as well have MDF bases with a printed sticker on them. there are some for Strength & Honour, Romans and Gauls, the Romans in rigid formations end up looking like a CPU Heatsink

Based on the Celts (1st pic, front right), there seem to be 3 variants of strips of close infantry, which seems sufficient for reasonable variation in the less uniformed troops.

Quite the good looking range and decent variation from the start too; guess that's more or less all anyone'd need? Also suddenly feel an interest in somehow using them for 15mm SAGA with the Age of Hannibal supplement... (though the stands of close order infantry aren't ideal there, but the main advantage of plastic would be not having the bendy spears common in tiny metal men, so depends how easy they'd be to split/adapt...)

Also, is that another version of HBO Rome's announcer man I spot there for the Romans? Who knew he ended up the character popularly brought to life in miniature form (Footsore also has one in 28mm: https://footsoreminiatures.co.uk/collections/incola-the-denizens-of-rome/products/marcus-the-orator). Saturn bless him though, what a lad.

Carthaginians and the Gauls come on the same sprues. An interesting design on the Romans. Possibly to squeeze an additional rank on to the base?

Rumors from Reddit:

Starter Set is Two-Player-Set; the seperate Starters concept from the Waterloo range was "not so popular" they said

Focus is on Cannae and Zama

Greek Cities like Syracusai and Massalia will get Miniatures in the future

Siege Weapons are plastic

Further Army options will be Metal, not Resin

Further content with a coming Campaign Expansion - similary to the 100 Days Campaign for "Epic BP" but featuring all three Punic Wars and the Carthaginian Mercenary Revolt

Campaign Books for Sicillian Wars and the Pyrrhic War are planned

Next Setting will be BP again, maybe Napoleon

Thank you so much for this. Now I'm twice as stoked -- love how they did the model strips for ranking at 1:19 on. Really smart move. looks truly epic

Looks interesting, although I'll probably give it a miss as I've already got multiple 15mm armies for Hail Caesar.

You can tell if it's an elephant, a chariot or infantry.

I loved the idea though, an entire army can fit in a large matchbox and you can play anywhere.

Personally I think 6mm is the lowest sane scale and it's great for huge stuff, with 15mm being the trade off between detail and scale. Most games look better playing with 15mm figures at 28mm ranges.

Personally, I think 2mm is great for ancients. You really feel like you're commanding huge masses of soldiers. Plus, units are pretty easy to paint up.

I took part in a Pharsalus game last year, using 2mm minis and Strength & Honour for rules:

Though I will probably pick this starter set up, especially if you can use a base for a unit. A good way to introduce new players to historicals.

What scale are these guys? 18mm? It didn't really say in the vid.

I prefer 6mm for my ancients, but I also like 60mm x 60mm basing because I am CRAZY!

the WG Epic line is somewhere between 13 and 15mm
the first models were closer to 13mm and fit with the larger 12mm models
while the last were closer to 15mm
