The following interaction is described in the "Bunker: Basic Training" section of White Dwarf issue:496, pages 23 and 143 in a question solution format.

I'm reading through these sections to better acquaint myself with the nuances of the rules interactions I might encounter in play.

I'm a bit confused on this one, I would think that model 5 being obscured by the tree is irrelevant if the shooting unit is within the woods?
(See pics)

(I have highlighted the relevant parts of the actual terrain rules which seem to create this scenario).

Is this actually how this plays out?

Yup.

Although the Tau can see out of the woods normally, they're still subject to True Line of Sight. Ergo, since there's a tree between them and model 5, model 5 gets cover.

If Model 5 gets Cover Model 4 should also get Cover. It looks like its partially obscured by a tree. It's not fully visible to every model in the attacking unit, because of the terrain feature

You can draw a line from some part of each T'au model to some part of model 4 without going through the tree, so it counts as direct line of sight.

It's also possible that the leaves are higher off the ground than model 4's head, and so it can be seen clearly under them.
