you already seem what happen in the modern warfare.the drones are real game changer of this era.they are tiny, cheap, expendable, hard to hit, hard to find, and can send some grenades to your soldiers and can even destroy tanks.not to mention that they can serve as the eyes and ears of the artillery, inviting deadly bombardment at any time.

so can we expect Tau's drone/drone swarm would get great buffed in further editions?

same as servo skulls.they are the actually drones of IOM and can be serve as direct combat units as Tau's drones.

With the direction the game is going and the fact that drones are little more than tokens now, I'd guess not.

Humans are expendable in 40k.
40k is also not realistic, or even trying to be.

No

Tau drones aren't really comparable to remote-piloted modern military drones

No

Tau drones aren't large or interesting miniatures GW is interest in selling

No

Casualty-free, low-risk-to-your-soldiers combat is the opposite of wargames like 40K, where you want maximum stakes with "heroes" stuck in right in the middle of the sci-fantasy action with their sword and plasma-pistol.

That pretty much answers this question. I guess we can lock this thread

The Imperium have extreme distrust regarding any kind of autonomous machinery. They want their servo skulls super basic and on a very short leash. Giving them bombs and the intelligence to pick their own targets is a big no-no
