As much as I love the new Wraithlord model, I don't think I'm going to want to pop $100 US to buy a couple.  And since I already have a couple of the older metal versions, I thought I would use them as the basis for conversions to bring them up to speed a bit.

This design draws heavily from the new plastic Wraithlord, and shouldn't take too long to sculpt.

The body will be lengthened a touch and have some eldar-ish plates on the chest.  The upper legs will be shortened a bit to compensate for the torso lengthening. A bit of bulk will be added to the upper arm and upper leg, and larger shoulder plates sculpted on as well.  I think it looks more like a Toughness 8 construct this way.

The head will also be a whole new piece, sculpted as a smaller version of the current wraithlord head.  Maybe if I'm lucky there will be a couple head options in the Wraithlord plastic kit and I won't have to do much but a headswap.

Though I am not doing Biel-Tan, I just used the GW pic as the basis for this Photo-Chopping job and didn't feel like working it into my own scheme yet.

I may have a chance to start this soon, so with luck I'll have some pics.

I think that looks very cool.  I'll be interested in seeing some WIP shots on this, as I have 3 or 4 of the older ones too.  A couple of questions:

1) How will you be thickening the arms and legs?  GS?
2) Same question re: the torso.

If this is going to be a GS intensive changeover, as much detail as you can provide would be great, my GS skills needs some work

Thanks and looking forward to seeing more.

I prefer it over the plastic wraithlord, actually, must be the shoulder weapon.

But please don't pose the arms like that, it looks like he's returning his school lunch tray to the conveyor belt.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Cruentus: I'll answer your questions as best I can...
1) How will you be thickening the arms and legs? GS?
Not using greenstuff, actually. I am stil deciding on the actual material, but I know I will use either Magic Sculp, Aves Apoxie Sculpt, or Firm Grey Super Sculpey. The Firm Grey has the benefit of giving me ample time to smooth and tool the pieces and then I can bake it when I am all finished and it will be ready to prme and paint.

2) Same question re: the torso.
Yeah, same deal. I am going to have to saw the torso in half and put a pin in there to lengthen it, then sculpt the bulk around it. Shouldn't be too hard. Then I'll take the antennae-like exhaust vanes and cut them off to reposition them as part of the body proper at the shoulders.

Oaka - Oh, he won't remain like that. I figure I'm going so far as to rescult him, so I should probably repose him too. Thank Gork for Dremel tools.

Clayman - wise guy.

Up your nose with a rubber hose.

Much better. It's very similar to a WL conversion I started (and shelved ) a couple years ago based on the Jes Goodwin sketches for the Wraithguard. Now that the plastics are coming out, I'll probably focus on converting the new kit rather than reviving the old project, so I can't wait to see your finished conversion of the old metal kit. Your stuff is always brilliantly executed, so this ought to be a real treat!

Not enough bang for your modeling buck. I think youll have a difficult time keeping things sculpted evenly and in the end still have a very static model. If you could add to the weapon holding theme of the new model it will give your sculpt some pizazz. As is its just kinda meh...even just adding updated shuriken catapults may help a bit. Those dxxk beaters that model currently have are the one thing I have never liked so it would be clutch to shrink the hands...the hardest part but worht it IMO.

Good luck!

Problem with the Wraithlord is the background of the constuct. Its dead.
You can go for a super stylish pose but it wont fit the theme of the character as i imagine it more just walking, shooting with no emotions whatso ever, not running around and beeing all epic

Wraithlords have no emotions.. pish posh.. check out the wraithlord who knows hes toughness eight.

Hes as old as 3rd edition and i still havent painted him.. But i tell you this, he was truly hated (along with the almighty seer council), by everyone he ever met on the battlefield.

Remember your eldar, be smung and arrogant.

EDIT: I think your sculpting idea is good provided you can pull it off. But I would definately go for a dynamic pose, as it looks better. BTW If wraithlords truly behaved like there were dead shouldn't they have a zombie poses with hands out grasping?

Thanks for your comments and pics, everyone.

I had some time to hammer out some changes. Here are the pics so far:

A quick summary of the changes - cut apart the legs and repositioned to give him a stalking pose, I wanted the wraithlord to look more alert than a wraithguard that just stands there and walks forward. Wraithlords have more awareness than most wraith-constructs and I wanted to show that here.

Cut the torso in half, lengthened it, and added the bulk of the chest and back, combined the power plant and the back into a smoother flowing piece, made the shoulder plates.  I sculpted the head, though I think I will shave it down a lot more to be more in line with the new plastic wraithlord design.

Still have to do a lot of work on the legs  I want to add a loincloth or a segmented crotch piece and some thigh plates like the new wraithlord has.  I think that will make him a good gap between the old and the new.

So what do you think so far?  I'll post some more pics as they warrant taking.

I like it, nice pose and the shoulderpads are a start on the way to get to your concept drawing. I think the head should be narrower from the head on shot. I hope the chest and abs get a little more beefy like the concept. I'm having a hard time seeing the calves so I don't know if I like the changes. I definitely like the concept of the legs so I'll let you work it out. go go go

Do not use the CLEAR dice!

Dear Whiny Space Marine Players,
you get 3+ armor saves on all your troops (save scouts), Assault cannons, a huge assortment of vehicles and weapons, arguably one of the best if not THE best tank in the game, funny helmets, and a partrige in a pear tree.

suck it up, space marines. You're the emperor's chosen superhuman warriors. stop whining like a guardsmen and take it like a superman!
