Time to vote!
This month is our annual Halloween Special. Spooks, spirits, ghost, goblins, monsters, kids dressed up trick-or-treating, costumes. Pumpkins and changing leaves. It’s spooky time here in the painting challenge, so break out the pumpkin spice flavored paint and get with the season!
As always, you're free to hand out as many votes as you like, and for any entry you feel deserves recognition, based on anything from technical proficiency or model choice, a neat conversion or a cool take on the theme, or anything else! You're also very welcome to leave some feedback here for the entrants, and many of the images click through to the Dakka gallery if you'd like to give out a vote or two there as well.

I always love the October Challenge. Everyone comes up with such nifty, spooky models!
I'll have to break my comments down over a few days, I think.
Daia T'Nara: Your flames are superb, and the bone is great, but the zombiefied face really makes this model for me.
Geifer: Your work on the black cloak is very nice-- there isn't a lot going on with this model otherwise, so that and the pale face really draw the eye.
Vejut: I like the two-tone effect on the fur. Did you base it on real-life dogs?
endtransmission: Eww. You really nailed the "from the sewer" look, both the model and the base.
samrobo1234: I like your more earthy skin tone for the orc, it contrasts quite nicely with the purple squig. Also, the blending of the purple into the lighter underbelly is quite well done.
inmygravenimage : You achieved a lovely, vampiric skintone. I also like how the fur transitions from the warm red-brown to grey at the tips. The glowing well is nice touch, too!
Halfling84: I like how you kept the red so dirty, almost brown. The subtle skull mask is also quite nice.
me: I complained over on my P&M blog about these models, with their poorly-placed mold lines and weird faces (especially Daphne). They were easy to paint, though, mostly due to the limited palette that comes from being late 60's Hanna-Barbera animated characters. Now I just need to find a game I can use them in...
More comments when I find the time. For now, though: great job, everyone!

I have a technical question: I already voted, but now I can vote again. Does that mean that the Machine Spirit did not register my vote?

I haven’t changed anything or reset the poll, so I would assume something got dropped from the machine spirit. Vote early, vote often!

Huge Bone Giant

Going to leave some comments again:
Daia T'Nara - Lovely flame paintjob, and the range of white to bone complements the look nicely
Vejut - That's some good work on the fur patterns and depth of the fur.
endtransmission - Great conversion work with a paintjob to match. The skin looks nasty in all the right ways.
samrobo1234 - Nice color composition both on the Squig and Ork, with plenty of depth and interesting little details.
inmygravenimage - That's a nice, subdued glow effect. Goes nicely with the critter without taking the focus off it.
Halfling84 - Red, black and bone are well executed. The red especially speaks to me. It's rich but also kind of subdued? Not sure exactly how to put it.
JoshInJapan - Nice work on the gang. Not sure if it's the pictures or a stylistic choice, but they feel a little dark to me. I would have expected livelier colors on cartoon characters.
theCrowe - I have a sand horse in my Tomb Kings army, but it doesn't look half as good as yours. I like the different hues you gave the sand.
Pariah Press - Nice color selection with the red hoods and white woofies.
Nevelon - That's a solid spectral blue on your ghosts and goes well with the verdant bases.
Leopold Helveine - You've got some great color choices on the vehicle and the crew complements the look nicely. Great job on the base, too.
KidCthulhu - Fun zombie with nice depth to the colors.
XvArcanevX - Good texture all over the model, and the limited color selection looks great on him.
Ezki - Great job as always. I'll say what speaks to me on this model especially is the dark to light fade on the gloves.
M0iM0i - I love the color choice on the ghosts and the dark lower halves look like they work especially well on multi-based models like these.
Captain Brown - The fire has a nice, classic look to it.
Llamahead - I like the color composition. There's not a lot of contrast overall, which always runs the risk of letting things blend into each other that aren't supposed to. But you made the various parts stand out well from each other. In detail, I like the very expressive patches of and shifts in color especially on the tentacles.
youwashock - Great blues, and nice color choices overall. I like how the bleeding eyes add a touch of warmth to the model's palette.
Turaxa - Always fun to see uniformed zombies.
straken619 - Great job on the skin and giving him presence with limited colors.
Midget Gems - Fun little band. The green skin has a nice glow to match the pumpkins in intensity. That's a nice touch.
Maharg - That's a nice, clean, classic look on the mummy.
Gulgog TufToof - That's a good range of colors that work pretty well together, with lots of little details that stand out enough to be noticed but don't draw enough attention to be distracting.
CancelledApocalypse - I love the neon overkill look. Very crisp and fairly subdued paintjob that gets so much of its character from strategically placed spots of color. Great job.
JoshInJapan wrote:Geifer: Your work on the black cloak is very nice-- there isn't a lot going on with this model otherwise, so that and the pale face really draw the eye.
Thank you. Yeah, the model doesn't have a whole lot going on. It's part of the reason why he sat so long unassembled in his box. I don't think even two years ago I would have had a good enough idea how to make such a bare model look interesting.

That's a cool idea. If/When I paint something lycanthropy, I'll have to give that a try.
Geifer wrote:

Most of the images I found from the actual cartoon weren't so cartoony. Also, I've been in a drab phase (my trademarked Paint Everything Brown technique) for a while, and I actually find it difficult to do more vibrant colors.
More comments:
theCrowe: That's a nifty kitbash, and the sand horse is an inspired idea. The verdigris on the headdress is well done.
Pariah Press: another nifty set of really, really old minis. I'm impressed with the amount of detail you manage to put into the models, especially the freehand on the shield and the faces on the wolves.
Nevelon: I like your choice of blue rather than the standard green on the ethereal parts. The various foliage on the bases add a lot to the otherwise staid models.
Leopold Helveine: The diamond pattern (freehand?) on the Vyper is well done. I also appreciate your choice of muted colors-- very menacing.
KidCthulhu: I like your use of blue rather than black to shade the whites. I've never managed to pull that off.
XvArcanevX: I really, really love how you shaded the robes-- the visible brush strokes give the model a painterly feel.
Ezki: Your work on the leather is outstanding. The visible brush strokes add a sense of texture to the model.
M0iM0i: One doesn't often see violet spirits. It looks good against the earthier elements on the bases.
Captain Brown: This is one crazy dude! I particularly like the mask.
Also, I just realized I haven't voted yet. I can see myself giving out a lot this month...

Time for some feedback…
Daia T’Nara - The freehand is really visually striking; for some reason I get a real ‘Ghost Rider’ vibe. I also like the pallid and muted tones on the grotesque face. Nice work.
Geifer - It’s The Emperor. Result!
Vejut - So here’s the thing. Werewolves are my absolute favorite monsters of all time. Obviously this means you are immediately due praise for being a person of great taste entering these models in the first place. That aside, I think you’ve done a lovely job with the color palette here. Nice and simple but very effective. The dashes of pink in the ears and the red eyes further sell the look. Charming little critters. Well done.
EndTransmission - Great tones used here for the leathery skin and the bright red hair is lovely.
Samrobo1234 - This is a really striking model and I have to salute your bold color scheme. There’s much to praise but may I first offer some observations. Firstly, I feel the transition in the squig skin should have been higher up and that wonderful pink fade somewhat more prominent. I also think highlighting the face area of the squig further into those brighter tones with just the highest parts lightly touched with a little pink would have elevated this already lovely work to another level. Most urgently though is the need for some deeper shades on the bone areas. Unfortunately the lack of shaded areas leaves them a little flat. That aside, the work on the orc skin and metallics is lovely.. and the colorful scratches and dents in some of the panels are delightful. It’s a lovely bit of work and I hope you don’t mind me offering my opinion on where it could be improved a little ( from one hobbyist to another)
Inmygravenimage - This is one ugly looking creature…in the best possible of ways. Great use of color and I like the slimy effect you achieved on the base.
Halfling84 - Really nice wasteland autumnal tones used effectively here. Crisp and clean. Good job.
JoshinJapan - There’s some excellent strokes used here to highlight those fabrics which really sell the creases and folds. I remember seeing pictures somewhere of the older Scooby Gang and they indeed had far more muted tones which you’ve reproduced. The hair is nicely done too. Good stuff.
TheCrowe - A very creative and cool little piece. Always got to respect an original!
Pariah Press - I like the different tones you’ve used on the fur here. Gives those dogs a natural look.
Nevelon - Pleasing and clean job here. I think it would have been nice to see you push those blue tones a little further up into the black robes… would’ve added an extra ‘spectral’ feel.
Leopold Helveine - This is a really striking and visually sumptuous diorama. I love the use of color on the wildly alien landscape and the work with the markings on the craft is wonderful. Nice job!
KidCthulu - I feel a little disturbed just looking at this. It’s all so… bleak and somber. A scene of despair, death and degeneracy. Effective and suitably macabre.
Ezki - Beautiful and compelling. Masterful in every way. The management of light and shadow, the use of brushstrokes to creates textures on the clothing. The glint of the jewel. The blood stained neck scarf. The precise work on the eye. It’s all sublime, it’s all accomplished, it’s all exciting to behold as a person who is seeking to improve in the hobby. I love this paint job and I want to be this good. The clear winner of this month in my view. I salute you.
MoiMoi - They’re pink and they’re spectral. I also love the pumpkins.
Captain Brown - Great freehand here and the fleshtones pop too!
Llamahead - This seems kind of Lovecraftian to me. Grotesque!
YouWasShock - Very unusual model this but I really like the glow you’ve managed to achieve emanating from the recesses of that deep hood. Creepy!
Turaxa - Getting Resident Evil vibes! Nice work on the clothes.
Straken619 - This is a striking bit of work. I really appreciate those subtle glimpses of purple/blue you’ve used in the shadows here. The same applies to the pink hues elsewhere. An effective drybrush has really accentuated those details and the work on the cloth is lovely. Nice job.
Midget Gems - Great use of vibrant color here. Very crisp and very fun to look at.
Maharg - Crisp and clean. Love the work on the bandages. Nice job.
Gulgog Tuftoof - Nice and neat work here. Some lovely use of color too, particularly on the pants! Have to mention the glowing weapons too! Great stuff.
Cancelled Apocalypse - Beautiful work as always. The blades are wonderfully realised and THAT hair. Just brilliant! The precise and skillful highlights on the mask are also lovely to behold. A really pleasing bit of work. An absolute contender and one of my favorites (again)
JoshInJapan wrote:

Thankyou! I wasn’t sure if I’d gone a little too far into the light greys but I couldn’t leave those creases much darker either. I’m glad you think I sold the effect well enough

My personal top three (+ my votes)
Joshinjapan - the scooby gang
Nostalgia galore here, all that was missing was an unmasked villain, I know you said you felt that the models weren't that great quality but I cannot see that in the paint, its top on the list for me.
Midget gems - grot pumpkin heads
Very fun kitbash, super on-theme, pumpkins always help nailing samhainn. I don't like grots but I like your grots.
XvArcanevX - Grand justice Gormayne
As a proud carrier of the sunrune, a sunworshipper such as I automatically have to vote on it, also to avoid being put in that dark-saint-nicholas book of his ofcourse. I think as a paint this is my favorite of this challenge and I don't just say that because you've been kind to me recently. All those bloody scribblings are a clever detail, also lke the detail on the books on which the judge is standing, oh and purple and cobalt blue just look sweet together.
I have to keep it to this top 3 for my votes, was first going to abstain but thought to log in just not to forget about it.

Thanks! With only one or two colors to work with on each model, I felt free to do more work on the shading. I'm glad you liked how they turned out.

I actually love your really stark highlights. Every once in a while, I try to take my highlights up to near-white, but I never seem to be able to pull it off. This model is inspirational.

Thanks! I wish there had been an Unmasked Villain, it would have really made the set.
More comments:
Llamahead: What an interesting model. You did great work on the fleshy parts-- they look truly organic. The yellow robes kind of blend into the organics, but that might be a function of lighting. Darker lining would probably have helped define them.
youwashock: Your paint job is quite effective, especially given that you only used two colors (blue and black). I admire your patience and perseverance in actually painting all the folds, rather than just relying on overbrushing, which I most likely would have done.
Turaxa: You put a lot of work into the really simple models. I would have liked to see a little more detailing on the bases-- they look unfinished in these picks. Just some lines to imply sidewalks or something would really help.
straken619: Your two-color palette works really well on this model. There is so much bling that would be too distracting with more colors. As it is, those little spots of gold really stand out.
Midget Gems: What a fun kitbash. What were the base models? I recognize one Gnoblar, but I'm not sure about the rest.
Maharg: Great work on the bandages. I also like your choice of colors-- classic Tomb Kings, but bright and new for the pitch rather than faded after millenia in the tombs.
Gulgog TufToof: I like the businesslike colors, like these guys just came up from the mines to kick some butt. The green glow is quite nice.
CancelledApocalypse: I love the hot pink hair, and your NMM never fails to impress.
Great work, everyone! I am looking forward to everyone's take on Ancients!

Daia T'Nara - Great mini Dara, love the face in particular.
Geifer - DEW IT!
Vejut - nice fur effect, looks realistic.
endtransmission – very gross looking, which of course is a good thing!
samrobo1234 - love the big purple squiggly beast. Great contrast for the desert base.
inmygravenimage - Fantastic mini graven, great fit for the theme. The tongue is a great spot of colour.
Halfling84 - is this what the kids call a dumptruck?
JoshInJapan - scooby dooby doo these look fantastic.
theCrowe - great song, great mini!
Pariah Press - I love the mounts in particular, good work!
Nevelon – #2spoopy, nice work Nev!
Leopold Helveine - that diamond pattern is really well done!
KidCthulhu - really nice work on the skin, suitably decayed and gribbly.
XvArcanevX - my personal favourite. I love this model and you've done a fantastic job on the painting. Great one for the theme, the little runes written in blood are terrific.
Ezki - as always Ezki your paint work is stunning, so impressive.
M0iM0i - great work on these, the colour effect looks ace.
Captain Brown - great work on a classic mini CB! Love the flames.
Llamahead - if ever I wanted to know what the end of the world looked like, it would be this. Great mini!
youwashock - very creepy, the spectral lighting seeping out the robes is very well done.
Turaxa - those intestines look very real, gross but good!
straken619 - Great work on a centrepiece mini!
Midget Gems - very spooky and very nice!
Maharg – love that blue, what a bright colour splash of colour against the light bone.
Gulgog TufToof – very cool, nice work on the skin!

Thank you for the comments Geifer, JoshInJapan, XvArcaneXv and olthannon!
I'm glad that the leather texture seemed to prove successful. It's always fun to paint!
In addition to the textures, I indeed tried to practice shadows and light. Although the light effect is still quite subtle and it could have more "drama". I often get comments that my display pieces are a bit flat, so it's something that I'm trying to work on.
Maybe one day I have the courage to push it far enough haha!
Great round! It was really hard to choose favorites. But choices have to be made regardless:
theCrowe: Loving this idea! I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like it. And very well executed too!
KidCthulhu: Very thematic and fittingly grotesque. Bonus points for the last picture. You can really tell, that there's a story behind this character. Great use of primary colors on the scheme!
XvArcanevX: Tastefully grimdark. The subtle blood splatters look great and the runes are a nice touch! The muted tones and the bright bone / paper color work well together. Chef's kiss.
straken619: It amazes me how you managed to paint Be'lakor in a month! There's just so many details and large surfaces. The red wings and the loincloth frame the body in a tasteful manner.
CancelledApocalypse: Brilliant and bold color choices. The non metallic metal on her swords make her stand out and I like the bluish tint on them! I might have personally gone with non metallic gold as well, although those are quite hard shapes (I couldn't place the reflections on those!). But mixing works also! I also like that you painted the hair with volumetric highlights instead of picking out every strand separately, which can often be seen.

Congrats guys, three fantastic minis well deserving of the plaudits!
Ezki wrote:CancelledApocalypse: Brilliant and bold color choices.
Thanks Ezki! Yeah, I'm not confident enough in my nmm to do much more than swords at the moment, maybe in future. The volumetric nature of the hair was more due to running out of time, though! ^_^'
Geifer wrote:CancelledApocalypse - I love the neon overkill look. Very crisp and fairly subdued paintjob that gets so much of its character from strategically placed spots of color. Great job.
Cheers! Yeah, I took a bit of a risk with the hair. Originally it was going to be ghostly white, but I thought it would be a bit too subdued if I did that. Banshees normally have fiery red hair to contrast the bone armour, so I just decided to go for it at the end and uncorked my bottle of Amsterdam Reflex Rose and slapped it on. Hopefully it wasn't too much.
Olthannon wrote:CancelledApocalypse - wonderful vibrant colours, very alien. Really suits the banshee minis.
Thanks! And yeah, gotta make those knife ears alien looking!
XvArcanevX wrote:Cancelled Apocalypse - Beautiful work as always. The blades are wonderfully realised and THAT hair. Just brilliant! The precise and skillful highlights on the mask are also lovely to behold. A really pleasing bit of work. An absolute contender and one of my favorites (again)
Cheers mate, much appreciated.
Well done everyone and thanks to everyone who took the time to comment. I haven't really had time this month, but I'll try to do a full list next month. Cheers to Nev for all the organisational work as always and hope everyone had as spooky a halloween as the entries suggest!

Congrats to all the winners, and thanks as always to Nevelon for running this comp.
Also, thanks all for the comments, I love getting feedback on my minis. Although I never even get close to the podium, I feel like my painting ability has finally reached a certain higher level because what people mention about my minis tends to be exactly what I was going for. It's nice to know that what I envision is actually something I can execute on.
See you all in the next round!

Congrats everyone! And much thanks for the feedback.
JoshInJapan wrote:Daia T'Nara: Your flames are superb, and the bone is great, but the zombiefied face really makes this model for me.
Thanks - that was a real shot in the dark, clipping the point of the nose off, but not really being able to see what I'd done until the mini was glued together, primed, and I put on the contrast paint.
Geifer wrote:Daia T'Nara - Lovely flame paintjob, and the range of white to bone complements the look nicely
Thank you. I did wonder about having the two different approaches to bone, but I definitely wanted to try at the thin foot and hand bones painted on the armour, and I feel like I would've mucked that up if I'd tried for more depth than just two very basic layers of bone then pure white. But I figured it's supposed to be painted on, not actual bone, so it's fine. Then I wondered about maybe doing all the bone decoration the same way, but the lure of just easily contrast painting it was too great, so I ended up just doing the 'ribs' with pure layer paints and contrasting the rest for convenience. While the Legion may have just rudimentarily painted their armour's bone deco on, I imagine they still shop at the same depot as the rest of the Imperium for their other skull trinkets.
XvArcanevX wrote:Daia T’Nara - The freehand is really visually striking; for some reason I get a real ‘Ghost Rider’ vibe. I also like the pallid and muted tones on the grotesque face. Nice work.
Thanks. Those flames are based on a pattern from their original appearance in WD99 (I think?), with mainly two-pronged licks of flame coming up from a sea of fire (same piece as had the 'born to die' motto I copied). Then I found an example while googling that did the red-orange flames with just the thin lines of bright yellow coming up through them, and that ended up combining really well - I feel like it's got a bit of a panel-van-art look, which fits my preference for old pop-punk 40k. I've been trying to use bolder highlights on skin in general lately - sometimes a bit over the top on close inspection, but I find at tabletop viewing distance it works pretty well - so I went hard on the pallid flesh after putting his contrast on - a bit messy, but I like the Legion having a rotten zombie look, rather than just 'ghoul but still robust', so mess is good.
Thank you. He coincidentally wound up as a Centurius reboot, but I didn't have that in mind initially - the old art for the Legion has a marine with sores and a breather tube going in his nose and a metal bracket that looks like it's there to hold his skull in one piece, I couldn't do anything that fancy (I don't sculpt if I can avoid it) but I've been watching Fallout, so the Ghoul gave me the idea. It was only when I got to thinking what to replace the mini's Crozius with that I remember Centurius's skull pal, and looked him up to realise the face was quite similar too.

Congrats on the winners. A lot of nice entries this month.
My top 3 is
inmygravenimage: That thing is creepy af. Very nice work on the skin.
XvArcanevX: Another great FEC model. I really like the way you painted the wig and the detail on book.
Ezki: I knew the moment I saw your entry that you would win. Very well painted, and the leather parts look fantastic.
Thanks to everyone that voted for me and for the comments.
