I think the strangest game I ever played was one I was challenged to back in the closing days of 3e by an Eldar player.
He was an average player, a good modeler/painter, & a nice guy to play with.
This player asked me if I still had my Baneblades. (at the time I owned 3 - two Armorcast & 1 FW).
My answer, "Yes, why?"
Turns out he wanted to pit all of his Eldar against my Baneblade Co.
Ok, I can do that. I mean, as a Guard player you hardly ever hear a request like that....
So we set a day. As it turned out to be a day when I'd be coming straight from work we agreed that since he'd almost certainly get to the shop 1st he'd set up the table. All I asked was that he remember to leave me enough room to deploy/move/etc. "Sure, no problem" Of course I'd never really doubted that - no one at the shop was in the habit of screwing each other over when setting up a table.
What I found terrain wise was akin to the pics you see of WWI no-mans land. Craters, some random "bare" trees, & debris. Here & there a few of the low wall sections the shop had. Not a bad looking table, but essentially an open field as there wasn't anything that'd constitute LoS blocking or any real degree of cover.
so I asked if he was sure this was the terrain he wanted. He insisted it was.
He then deployed all of his forces seemingly randomly & proceeded to charge roughly 3k worth of mostly foot Eldar straight across NML into the teeth of my 3 Blades.
There was no attempt at any kind of maneuver strategy, ganging up on 1 Blade, hitting from my flanks, etc. Just a Banzai charge of space elves.
I tabled him in fairly short order while only taking minor damage.
He seemed to be enjoying the game (as much as you could call it that) and he was perfectly happy with the outcome. ???
And then he never played 40k again.
Not a tourney, not in our weekly 40k nights, not a pick up game, nor in any of the shops campaigns or leagues.
The most he'd do 40k wise is join in discussions.
When pressed on why he wouldn't play anymore? His reply was that all his Eldar died assaulting the Baneblades.
Evidently he'd decided to quit 40k & wanted all of his models to have died in battle.
So he chose death by Baneblade.
