I was looking at some pretty impressive display boards for some armies... this can't be standard for showing up to tourneys and other big games, can it?

How do you go about constructing one, and then the more important part, transporting it?

Or is this nothing that anyone should worry about.

Back in the day, those display boards were part of the paintjob judging portion of grand tournaments. They weren't considered a mandatory thing.

I spent 150hours back in september repainting all of my Thousand Sons for a WTC event, only to learn the morning of that the "best painted" category required a display board to participate....

Ouch. Did you ever build one?

How do you transport it, do you use multiple parts and jigsaw it together at the event?

Also what size/material are you using?

It depents how you have to travel, by car it has to fit your car if your traveling with public transport its an other thing it has to fit in your carry case or bag you take with you.

Space is a limiting factor. The boards will be for Knights and eventually custodes.

I just need something basic (lights and sounds, and thematic score are not in the cards as I'm still having troubles with single LEDs.)

Even of you don’t need a display board for paint scores etc. it’s good to have a tray to move minis from table to table so you don’t need to re/un pack everything from your case.

I use a basic cafeteria style tray. Not fancy, but gets the job done.

The plastic cafeteria tray?

Basic tray for getting your army from one table to another.

Not fancy. Not pretty. Will not help anywhere there are painting scores that include display boards. Pure transport for minis from point a to point b without getting the bag out and nestling everyone back into the foam.

All function, zero style.

Edit:
One of the reasons to have a board for your army is practical. People make them fancy, because we are hobbyists. But there is a functional need for them as well.

The functionality never crossed my mind
