Hi all!

Brand new to the world of Warhammer 40k and looking at picking up an army.

Which one out of Tyranids or Custodes would you recommend to someone brand new to the game and that of painting too.

Thank you in advance!

Welcome

Whichever one they want to paint and play with.

That's the best answer really. What you might try is heading over to the GW store and opening a new tab for each model in each faction and then go through and close any tabs on models you don't like. See how many are left and what's left after you do that.

You might find that you like the idea of the army, but on a model front you really only want to own/build/paint one or two etc...

Both are solid choices. Custodes have the advantage of being a more elite based army in general. So you'll have fewer models on the table
That said Tyranids can go many ways and are very diverse. You can go with very few big models or you can go with a middlerange or a mix or a swarm of smaller ones.

Do you like the color gold?

In all honesty, Custodes are a smaller, elite force, so they can be less expensive.... until the pretty Forgeworld resin catches your eye.

As an example I wanted to create an all Dreadnought Custodes list, using the Grotmas Custodes army (Solar Spearhead). To build from the ground up (which requires a lot of Forgeworld dreadnoughts) can cost a pretty penny.
Spoiler:

In the plus side, you can easily paint the men in gold, and use most of them in Horus Heresy games too.

Non-Imperium armies are less common and cooler than Imperium armies. Everyone freaking plays Imperium.

Spoiler:
Shoot, I went Sisters of Battle, Grey Knights, Blood Angels, and Elysian Drop Troops and the only non-Imperial army I played was Ork Nobz bikers.

The only way we can ever solve anything is to look in the mirror and find no enemy

I play both, and paint both!

For being brand new to the game and to painting, Custodes would is the easiest to get into (and cheapest too). I'd say to keep to a few infantry kits first, and start practising on them. Build them up, then paint one or two. You'll get to feel the painting process, and see how it goes for you.

If you like the look of them both equally, there is now wrong choice either way tho! Just remember that it's a slow process no matter what, so don't get discouraged if you don't get the result you want right away!

I can offer you all kind of tips to paint either army so if you have more questions, just ask!

Fantasy armies - Retired (Tomb Kings, Vampires, Empire, Chaos Warriors/Daemons, Dark Elves)

Tyranids army - Ever evolving, but about 10k pts
Custodes - 3,500pts (Fully painted yay!)
Thousand Sons - 4,000 pts
Eldar - 3,000pts
