Hi. I'm a new player in the process of expanding from 1000 points to 2000. The short version is I need help spending my last 460 points.

I currently own-
Ballistus Dreadnought (130 points)
Infernus Squad (90/180)
Inceptor Squad (120)

After watching the Auspex Tactics videos about their recent updates, I ordered these from my LGS but haven't paid for them yet-
Intercessor Squad (80/160)
Outrider Squad (80)

I know people are not big on Ballistus Dreadnoughts, but it gives me some 48" ranged weapons. I was excited to build those Inceptors, but I think changing Meteoric Descent to 6" makes them less attractive for 120 points. Outriders seem to handle a similar task a lot cheaper. Is that true? How useful are Intercessor's sticky objectives?

Here's what I'm using for my 1000 point Firestorm Assault list-
Captain in Gravis Armor (80)
Leading 6 Flame Aggressors (240)
Chaplain with Jump Pack (75)
Leading 10 Assault Intercessors with Jump Packs (160)
Two squads of 3 Eradicators (2x100)
Two squads of 5 Hellblasters (2x115)

Units I'm in the process of building-
Marneus Calgar and his Homeboys (now 200 points)
leading Company Heroes (95)
Impulsor (80)
Repulsor (180)

What do you wise folks think I should play? How much do you change lists for specific opponents? Thanks.

I think you should play whatever makes you happy - even if it's not what the rest of the hivemind has decided upon.

Make a list, play it a few times, note what works/what doesn't against the people you actually play with, and then adjust accordingly.

This. (Full disclosure, I’ve played very little 10th, this is general advice from decades of playing 40k across editions)

What units are “hot” can change in an instant as GW tweaks the points. What you need to do is figure out what you want to play, and make sure it gets the job done. Unless you are playing at the top tables in a tournament, there is room for fun in your list. You might need to take other units to shore up weak spots, but that’s part of list building.

Be sure you can deal with all sorts of targets. Do you have what it takes to bring down tanks and monsters? Thin out hordes of chaff? Kill elite units?
Can you get units where they need to be to score? This is not just boots on objectives, but units that might need to get places and do certain things at the right time.

Looking at your collection, you’ve got a good mix of firepower. Some AV, some infantry killing. Nice TAC list. Bit short range, but that’s on brand for the firestorm detachment. Not a huge amount of mobility, but all your guns being assault will help with that.

You don’t have a lot in the way of screening units or action monkeys. Board control is one of those soft things it’s hard to quantize. You don’t want guys DSing right next to you and murdering key units. Or blipping onto a location to score points. I generally like to includes some units that scout/infiltrate to help with this.

--

How much of what you need is very localized. It doesn’t mater what the tournament meta is doing if all the guys at your FLGS play a certain kind of list. I don’t list tailor, but keep tabs on what I need to expect. If things like knights and heavy armor are common in your area, your general TAC list should probably pack some extra melta (or equivalent) If they are rare, you can just ignore them and focus on the mission for those games.

Hi, ODB,
Some tips from a avg to above avg competitive player:

Nevelon is right about the lack of action monkeys. If you remove the chaplain and split the jump intercessors into 2 squads, that might be better, though in your 1000 point list the numbers come out extremely awkward (unless you buy a scout squad, which might be a good idea), so not there.

Also a note on the firestorm: IMO its biggest weakness is the inability to fall back and act. Facing two such lists at a tournament, I repeatedly charged his melee units with my rhinos, neutering their charge mortals and their ability to go after the targets they wanted. I think there are too many ways to stop that big unit for it to be worth the investment. In firestorm, anything getting that close to an opponent wants effective-vs-all melee weapons. Like that aggressor unit, & Marneus Calgar. Those are good picks.
