How do
I haven't played 40k since probably 7th edition as a rough guess. I'm getting back into it with a couple of mates and we've all picked up a combat patrol each; one Sororitas, one Necrons and me as DE.
Being completely new to this edition and ruleset I'm curious as to how evenly matched these combat patrols are. EG, looking at points values it seems that my DE have about 100 points more than the Sororitas, but it seems that removing the Ravager would balance the points cost but really limit the force compared to model count on the other side.
Do I or we need to do anything to balance our forces, or are they designed this way to be somewhat even all things considered?

In theory all the CPs are balanced against each other. The patrol datasheets are not necessarily a 1-to-1 match with the normal matched play versions, so they might not have all the abilities that give them their points in the full version.
In practice GW has always had balance issues, and a lot of the CPs pre-date the game mode that fields them. Some may be stronger then others. But they should all be vaguely in the same realm.

Yeah, if you weren't aware there is a specific Combat Patrol game mode that is slightly cut-down in comparison to the full-fat 40K. The combat patrol boxes are meant to be balanced against eachother if you're playing that - and bear in mind that the lists are completely fixed, down to specific load-outs of wargear on each model / unit. If you're buying CP boxes but playing full 40K with them, you may find additional balancing is required...

I don’t know what the CP dictates. Or what’s good in a matched play list, but magnets are always a good option.
As the CP loadout is always fixed, WYSIWYG is a little less relevant then the main game.

Yeah that's not much of an option for me at the moment; I need to get the full box built and painted in time for a game on the 25th and have some very busy days between now and then! So will be prioritising speed on this occasion sadly!

Nah, I'd rather take my time and do them to a standard I'm happy with than rush it. Not that there's anything wrong with that approach, it's just not the one I want to use is all.
So I had my first games yesterday, 1 against sisters and 1 against Necrons. I'm really disappointed with the Incubi. They chucked out the wounds but not being able to charge from a raider (we were restricted to combat patrol stratagems only) really hindered them. And how is it that a supposedly elite bodyguard unit only has 1 wound per model when hellions and reavers have 2?! Automatically Appended Next Post: Separate to that, and getting to what this part of the forum is about... We're putting 500 point lists together and branching out into full 40k. I'd be grateful for people's thoughts on the following:
Archon, splinter pistol & huskblade
10 kabalites, blaster and splinter cannon
2 venoms, each with 2 splinter cannons
2 Talos, each with haywire blasters, liquifier guns and Talos gauntlets.
That comes to 495, though there are no points free for enhancements on my archon.
Thoughts appreciated!

....that will be habit, from days of yore when blaster and splinter cannon was the common loadout.
Still getting used to the new rules, last time I played heavy weapons couldn't fire if they'd moved so plenty of learning left it seems!

Personally I generally ditch the Archon in favor of a Succubus. She's the cheapest HQ & the only reason I need a HQ model is to A) have a legal force, B) carry the Enhancement that gives me an extra pain token each turn she's on the table. I also give her a blast pistol - just in case. But her whole job is to sit back & generate me a pain token. Bonus if she can hold an objective/achieve some secondaries/pitch in in a fight. But being in a fight is a good way to stop getting that bonus pain token....
For your Talos:
Yep, no reason not to go with Liquifiers & the Guantlet.
But magnetize your Talos tail guns. Or bitz order extra tails (1 for each type of gun) via EBay etc & then magnetize the tails.
Because sometimes the Haywire is what you need. But sometimes you might want to change it up.

Remember that if you're going to normal 40k, I would imagine you're looking at the Skysplinter Assault detachment, so you do get access to a strat that will let Incubi charge after disembarking. I'm not sure if that changes your ideas- but swapping a Venom for a raider would accommodate all of the Kabalites, leaving the second venom for Incubi... But you probably have to drop the Talos to make it happen.

Thanks everyone for your advice.
Game day is approaching so I've revised the list slightly -
Succubus
10 kabalites, blaster and dark lance
2 raiders with dark lances. Kabalites split evenly between them
2 Talos, with liquifiers, gauntlets and haywire.
That's 500 on the nose.
We're then planning a 1000 point game beyond that. I'll be keeping the same baseline force largely just for simplicity and to reduce the amount of stuff I need to get painted in time, but will add another squad of Kabalites (same load out), a Ravager, 10 hellions (2 wound models, decent movement, eligible to charge when they fallback) and 6 reavers (for the mortal wounds from their fly by attack).
I already have the models so it's gonna be a case of just seeing how they play out. I'm just out for fun as opposed to the most efficient list and this seems like fun to me (we'll see how right or wrong I am on that in the next 10 days or so!)
