This is an unfortunate but inevitable outcome.

Our FLGS has been around for about 30 years. back in 2019 we lost the owner to cancer. a couple years after that the long time manager left to start his own place.

Sadly due to current managements decisions negatively impacting the store and also it's gaming community i turned in my key and resigned from my position as "late night" game host for Saturdays. This was a hard thing to do since i have been gaming there for about 20 years and running late night since 2008.

Since this was our last night before we move to a different gaming location, most of the regulars came together for one last go. We were missing about a half dozen players who could not make it in, but i leave this night with happy memories and a bit of sadness-

The store as it was

The final send off-

Ah that's a bummer, especially after such a long history. Hopefully your new location will prove fruitful and you can transfer much of your community over.

Ouch! I'm in the same boat, the local wargaming society (20+ year history, 4 years with current management) is reorganizing to a competitive 40k only club and kicking everybody else out.

The old meta is dead and the new meta struggles to be born. Now is the time of munchkins.

That is pretty much what's happening, We have around 20 players both regular and sporadic that have pretty much given up on all the behavior that has gone on over the last couple years, we tried really hard to help fix things but were rebuffed at every attempt. The finale insult came last week and we all decided that was the line we were not going to allow to be crossed. screwing over really great members of the community for spite is a bridge to far.

I've been looking at pictures of your games for over a decade here, sorry to hear you're having to uproot in unpleasant circumstances. I hope your new location works out!

Yeah, the gaming club I founded with one other member about 4 years ago, now is heavily into 40K Comp only.

It is really hard to see something that you founded go so differently than the direction you are going, and the way the group was initially founded.

Good luck on your next endeavors!

Fortunately the group is just fine, it is the actions of the store management that became the problem. To the point i don't expect the store to survive much longer.

That's always rough. We lost our store a couple years ago and it just feels like we're now getting settled again. Hope you guys are able to keep going with minimal disruptions!

I can't comprehend the mindset of kicking out people playing other games just because you favour competitive 40K. Absolutely weird behaviour.

I can, GW and several other companies have been pushing the tournament thing really hard for a while now. it is good for sales, it creates FOMO, GW went from a "game company" to a "model company with a game attached" to now a "luxury lifestyle brand". current 40K isn't making them "your dudes" anymore. the idea of personalized armies played in a casual setting is not what they do now and the focus of those kind of communities reflect that.

Also consider that GW is the elephant in the room. there are lots of great games out there with good rules and settings (even some by our own Easy E. here-love castles in the sky ) But GW stuff is so big it just drowns nearly everything else out in player base and visibility.

Such a bummer when a group is pushed out by short-sighted ownership. Early on, our club was pushed out as the shop decided the night we gamed on was now "Board Games only". Nevermind that we had been gaming there for over a year and there were alot of tables. They're doing fine without us, but we definitely stopped spending our $ there and we moved to gaming elsewhere.

Good luck to you and your fellow gamers. I hope your new location works out well.

Little update-

The first night at the new place in our little corner of the gaming space, it is about half the open space and there are 3 private rooms of various sizes for the players who need a little more quiet.

By the end of the night we had over a dozen of our transfer players roll through.

Well, you got that sorted quick! I'm afraid my group won't be so lucky, third spaces are practically unheard of here.

Nice! What's the location? Part of an office?

Seeing the pictures of this place, I've been to this shop a handful of times. I did not know the owner had passed away.

I can't really say I've had the best of experiences with some staff at that store, but it would still be sad to see another BnM game shop shutter (which i know is not what you're saying is happening here, however when long time people start jumping ship, it's time to read the tea leaves/writing on the wall). I still occasionally make ventures into the shop because for the longest time they did stock some truly oddball games that you didn't really see anywhere else.

It used to be a bank in a historic building, they sub divided it up, part of it is a martial arts/wrestling studio, part of it is game store and i think there are some other offices.

@Ensis Ferrae

Im not sure how much life the store has left, but it has gone downhill since the owner died and the original store manager failed to acquire the store from the owners wife. The manage moved on and opened the store we moved to now. It is a sad thing since that store has been around since the 90s. Since the core group moved with me, it was the first time in over 20 years there was no later night gaming at the old store.

Cool. Are those old Bank Building tables? They look rather nice compared to the usual gaming-store tables.

Another regular joins us from the old store.....

Apparently the manager at our old haunt sold off the old vending machine and it got put in at our new location.

Update. to nobodies surprise, word officially came down this weekend the old store is shutting down. We all saw it coming and even predicted it was only going to be at most 6 months....our guesses were pretty close.

Have you asked if there's a way for you to leave stuff there? Rent a janitor closet, or put a locker somewhere out of the way?

Because it is a subdivided multi-use building there is no such space. the only lockers they have are small personal item gym type lockers. i have just streamlined what i bring now to games i have scheduled instead of bringing things i "might" play.
