I was looking over the last points update when I noticed this little oddity.

The Knight Warden (Avenger Gatling) is 450 points...

and the Knight Crusader (Avenger & RF Battle Cannon) is 445.

Why is the Knight with more weapons cheaper than the one with less.

What am I missing?

Melee power? Bondsman ability?
GW is bad at balance?

The difference is in each units abilities;

The Warden can give an Armiger the ability to decrease damage taken by one and when it shoots infantry and bikes it gains devasting wounds, also it has better melee either the chain sword or the fist.

The Crusader gives an Armiger +1 to hit with ranged weapons and if it stays still ranged attacks have Sustained hits 1.

GW must believe that those abilities make up for the difference in ranged firepower. Whether they are right or not is up in the air.

I agree. The Warden has better Abilities and its Melee Weapons are capable of wrecking Vehicles, Monstrous Creatures, and Super-Heavies. The Crusader's RF Battle-Cannon is good for destroying hordes and light vehicles but will find an upward battle against heavy infantry and heavy or super-heavy vehicles.

With it's strength 10 and damage 3 the battle-cannon is actually really good against heavy infantry, the gatling cannon is really the anti-horde weapon, and it can switch it out for the giant melta for heavy targets if needed.

My list is 2 Errants, 2 Helverin, 2 Warglaive, 1 Moriax (lightning lock×2), and either a Warden or a Crusader.

It's mostly just a result of the Questoris line being a complete mess this edition after GW gutted their core mechanic and has yet to design something in its place.

The whole design of the Questoris line is that they were supposed to lead a squire by example. The bondsman buff applied to both the Armiger AND the Knight that granted it and -1 damage per attack is definitely a really strong ability on a Questoris Knight.

Unfortunately, when Knights were a problem, mostly due to Towering being completely busted, they just kind of decided to gut everything out of the faction and have let it rot as inferior Armiger spam (+Canis Rex). In theory they've been designing a fix for the codex, but it seems like at the moment they just don't know what to do with Titanic Knights.

Yeah, that seems odd! Maybe a balancing quirk or mistake?
