I slap a layer of color on them, but no texture. For example, my desert-themed Sisters of Battle have fully-beige bases (including the rim), but sand only on the top of the base.

That being said, I must admit that a black rim gives the base a certain elegance. Perhaps I should do that for my Custodes.

I black rim all my bases, regardless of what’s on the top.

I feel it helps act like a frame, and also helps to separate the mini from the table, as I rarely am playing on the same terrain as is on the base.

I used to paint the rims on my Deathskulls blue, with characters getting a lighter blue rim, but nowadays I stick with the classic black

Yeah, I usually paint my base rims green, but some armies get gray. I often write the name of the character the mini represents on the base rim, to make it easier to identify characters in Kill Team and Inq28.

Like others have said, I've dabbled in a few rim colours but have settled on black.

Although, for my kill team games I have put little nameplates on the side of the base. There's a website that will stl's that you can print of, or they can print it for you. It's not that expensive or difficult when you have only a dozen models in the game.

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

This is exactly what I do. The only other colors I've used were for older editions of 40k, when all my guardsmen looked the same.

Yeah I used to like rimming with the old Graveyard Earth, but now my dregs of that are a precious commodity - plus it doesn't suit the wintery grey gravel and snow bases I do on my current armies. So just black nowadays.

I've settled into using a dark metallic colour for my rims. Tin bitz:ish or a dark gunmetal shade. Probably going to switch to Army Painter Fanatic "Death Metal" if it turns out to cover well and levels decently. I used to do black rims once but decided a metallic rim looks more elegant, black acrylic is a bit naff colour IMHO

I started with black on my Skaven and Bretonnians.

The Dwarves, with their 'mountainside scree' basing, got a light grey. Dark Elves got 'muddy winter' basing, and use a light tan (started as Graveyard Earth, has since been replaced with a closely-matching craft paint). Lizardmen are getting a 'jungle floor' basing, and dark brown rims.

Just paint, no texturing or flock. Since WFB is played in blocks, the sides of the bases are in contact and textures would quickly wear off.

I find simply having a solid color provides enough of a break from the table to the basing for me. As usual, YMMV.

I use black rims. It echoes the grout in my custom cobblestone basing and I like how it frames the model:

After reading this thread, I'm reconsidering painting the rims to my Ork Kill Team black.

The rest of the Kommandos are so dark, that maybe a brighter color might be better.

Been doing for my Orks a Steel Legion Drab Brown, given that I go for a desert sand base it helps make it pop out.

Goblin green rims for me; maybe it's because my introduction to wargaming was the 3.5E Chaos Space Marines and 3E Tyranids Codices (in 5th...) but I've always had a soft spot for them.

Usually I paint them fitting to the overall part of my collection. Tallarn dudes sand colored, Djungle regiment green, Admech purple, Inquisition black. With maybe some odd ones that have specific custom bases in other colors if it just looks better that way.
I have never considered decorating the rims though. Interesting thought.

I usually try to match whatever the main colour on the base is, or something that complements it. So grass and mud get brown. Industrial get grey.

In terms of decoration I’ve been rather taken by hazard striping on my mechs of late
