I want to use Valerian or General Valoris in my Custodes army I am building.

I really like the Shadowkeepers color scheme of black with gold/red accents.

If I include Valerian or Gerneral Valoris, am I supposed to keep them in their original gold armour or should I paint them to match the rest of my army?

Paint them how you like. As long as they are armed recognizably or at least sufficiently different to any other characters you have, then you just need to be clear with your opponent.

I ran into the same issue when I wanted to use Canis Rex and change his color scheme. The problem I had with him, is that he looks like any other Questoris Knight.

But, I think the General looks different enough. Valerian, I'm not so sure about, since his base and ugly mug are the only things that stand out on him.
