Hello, I have recently returned to the time honoured tradition of taking my money and sacrificeing it to the 5th Chaos God: Games Workshop, by buying and playing Adeptus Custodes.

I am about as financially stable as a kite in a hurricane, so I can't rush out and buy a lot of the resin models that the internet is so keen on me owning (aka Tanks and Telemon Dreadnoughts).

What should I use instead of those?

My main opponent is another forum poster here, who has a strange love for giant robots.

Eventually I will have to play another Mecha enthusiast who has creepy Cheesecake Pinup Tau.

I currently possess (but havent built all of them) :a Blade Champion, Valoris, Valerian (but not his Sister of Silence compatriot), 5 Witchseekers, 5 Prosecutors, 10 Custodians w/ Spears, 2 Custodians with Vexilla, 3 Jetbikes,
6 Aquillons, and an old Eversore Assassin.

Nothing, yet. Build (and paint if you like) what you have - play a game or three and see what happens.

Hopefully you'll then have an idea of what you like & what YOU want rather than a net lister's opinion.

How important is using GW kits to you?

Because I hear there's quite a few decent 3d print versions of Custode tanks & dreads out there.
And that's without dipping into 3d piracy.

You could also invest in some (2-3) Knight Armigars for ranged fire power. Either anti-personel or ant-tank.

I've been out of the hobby and I have been looking on etsy and ebay and I can't tell on some of the custodes dreadnoughts if they are legitimate, proxy, or 3d pirated copies.

I want to avoid Imperial Knights as that is what I play against in 80% of my games.

Maybe Jetbikes will work? I just don't have any reliable way to take out targets at range.

Well, if it's physical & looks identical like the GW/FW piece & is reasonably priced it's likely piracy.
If it looks identical to the GW/FW piece & it's a file, it's piracy.
If you see variations on either it's someone's proxy.
If it's physical & identical but expensive (as in "No, I'm NOT paying FW prices") it's either real or someone's piracy that they're hoping to cash in on.
In any case? Pick the good looking ones you can afford & don't worry about it.

*Maybe. Both the Bolters & Salvo Launchers got slightly improved recently.
*You might look into Imperial Agents & see if there's anything there that you can ally in.
*Also don't forget about the Custodian Guard with Adrasite/Pyrithite spears. The Pyrithites are 12" Melta weapons. And they should be pretty simple to kitbash using existing plastic kits + melta barrels in place of the bolter. Deepstrike them into range of the offending unit, light it up (even if you don't get the melta bonus you're still getting the -4AP D6 damage & at least rerolling 1s to wound). Then charge- remembering your Martial Katas, Lethal critting on 5+, & improving melee AP by 1. All coupled with a high volume of attacks....

Right now, going by conversations on r/AdeptusCustodes, there are probably far more counterfeit Caladius Grav-Tanks in circulation than genuine ones.

And it's not just because people are cheapskates... It's because the real deal is always out of stock. They say piracy is often more of an availability issue than a pricing issue. There's a point where a company only has itself to blame if its inability to meet demand drives people to look for alternatives elsewhere.

Pretty good option too. Over on Reddit, I made a side-by-side comparison of the Armiger Warglaive vs. Venerable Contemptor Dread, and despite the Dread's access to subfaction abilities and 2+ resurrection rule, I think the Warglaive has a slight edge (mostly thanks to its superior speed and range).

Yeah that's fair.

That’s a great approach! Proxy models and conversions can be awesome!
