Hi, I know it's not the most loved version of Epic, but it was the first version I bought back in the days and I'm quite fond of the streamlined quick-play ruleset.

However, when I recently resurfaced this game to my table I stumbled upon a rules question. Since there never were a lot of Epic 3rd communities online, and definitely not in 2025, I dare to ask my question here. I hope there's someone who can provide some insight. Thanks beforehand.

Let's say I have one Space Marines detachment that's shooting at an Orks detachment. Scouts and Devastators against Orks and Gretchins. The Space Marine detachment is packed together, all Devastators close to eachother, and one Scout unit 30 cm away. The Orks are packed together, flanked by one Gretchins unit.

The Shooting Phase:
-Add Up Firepower
... Add up firepower values of attacking units ... are within range of at least one target (of the target detachment).

The Scouts unit of the attacker is in range of all Ork detachemnt's units. The Devastator units are only in range of one Gretchin unit.

7. Allocate Hits
ii. Hits can only be allocated against units in range AND IN RANGE OF AT LEAST ONE UNIT from the attacking detachment.

If I read this correctly, I can now use all firepower from the Devastators for hits on target (Orks) they cannot reach. Only because the Scout is in range. If this is correct, then we should interpret this as a virtual fight where the Scouts tell the loactions of the target and all other units form the shooting detachment fire on that position. My question: is this rule correct (and ranges are not exact but rather virtual) or is the rule completely buggy?

The firing range can be longer than the stats of the unit with this rule. The range of the Devastators is extended because one Scout unit is in range.

Ok, let's see if I can help ^^

Yeah, you're mostly correct, even though there's a fine combination of things that have to happen at the same time for it to be ^^

After you've determined the amount of attack dice rolled by the detachment, it does not matter if it's coming from any specific unit of it, so yes, you can use scouts to extend the attack range of a detachment as it will allow you to allocate more hits on extra enemy units, at the cost of it also allowing enemy detachments to assault them and rout your whole detachment due to overwhelming melee superiority.

That said, the gretchin must be part of the same detachment as the orks, or you'll need to split fire.

It is something we've actually been discussing a bit on the Epic Remastered FB group, and there's some mixed opinions on it, but other than that, your interpretation is correct, and a single Epic 40k phase usually encompasses a fair amount of time and maneuvering.

For rules, there's two main digital venues you can check to have all the info:

- The Epic 40k Compendium (https://thehobby.zone/resources/e40k-compendium/Content/Home.htm) with all the original rules, errata and additional rules from all publications
- The Epic Remastered Project webpage (https://epicremastered.com/core/index.html), where you can find a rewriting of the rules for ease of reference and clarity, plus some QoL improvements and organic developments on it
