I've been thinking of painting my Space Marines as a Raven Gaurd Successor Chapter, but I was told today by someone at the shop that I should just paint them up as standard Raven Guard so I could use Shrike in my army.

Something that I couldn't do, if I played a successor chapter.

Is there any validity to this argument?

(An all black army seems kinda boring to me.)

Ask your TO if you’re going to a tournament.
Ask your local opponents if you’re casually gaming.

There are, however, no rules that say you have to paint your minis a certain way to field certain models.
And I ABSOLUTELY would not care if they’re not painted in official colors.

No validity.

There might be a few specific locations or events that have a paint restriction but this is not an actual rule in the general game.

Indeed. I'm thinking of getting Shrike to roll with my Blood Ravens, and I'll just paint him in their colors - even replace his Raven Guard shoulder pad with a Blood Ravens one!

Heck, I know a guy who painted Guilliman in Blood Ravens colors...

You do you!

Yeah, I call BS. I've played several tournaments and events and have seen my fair share of Blue "Red Corsairs" (my own army) or Yellow Ultramarines.

Paint your army however you want. Also long as it is 100% consistent then it won't be an issue with any TO I've seen.

I guess you can't account for every store and person in the world - but I'd say only a minority are worried about this.

There was a moment around 8th edition where it felt like it was potentially going to be more of a thing - and I think GW tried enforcing it for some of their Warhammer World tournaments. But it then died away.

Is that even a thing? I thought Chapter Tactics and any real restrictions were gone on that sort of thing?

It's a question of whether its okay to paint Shrike purple or something like that. Personally I have no problem with it. Paint your dudes how you want.

No, it is not a thing in the general game (just like it's not a thing in HH).

But some tourneys/events/locations (Warhammer World) might have additional house rules.

Not a problem, never was.

How you paint your guys and what rules they have is not connected in any way.

If you really need, just call the model Shmike and use Shrike rules. He's just like Shrike, but from your successor chapter.

Or you just shrug & let your opponent think your playing Ravenguard (because you are ruleswise) that're "painted wrong".

I guess I could always say that they are Alpha Legion in Disguise and that they got some facts wrong.

Thanks for the help!

At one point there were paint based rules. They are not in the current ruleset. GW has actually gone pretty far back towards “chapter and/or paint don’t mater, use the rules you want”. There are certain units you can’t include in the same list, ex from different supliments with a different keyword.

Someone out there might have an issue, but that can be said about everything. No reasonable person should have an issue these days. If they do, ask for a rules cite showing why what you are doing is wrong. Unless it’s part of a house rule for a specific tournament or venue, they won’t be able too.

It's not Shrike. It's Spike.

It's not Raven Guard. It's Robin Guard.

They just happen to have all of the same rules and stats.

Yup! Just as my Marneus Augustus Calgar is actually Marius Alexander Krieger

And actually, the real power move is to use your own paint scheme, then paint up whatever heroes (from any chapter) you like, and then play whatever chapter rules you like at the time.

And They Shall Not Fit Through Doors!!!
