I've begun grappling with the changes to my army lists that are needed for 3rd Edition. We now know that most (but not all) existing units and options will be covered by the mythical pdf that will be released soon, so I suppose exercise this isn't strictly necessary. However, my Sons of Horus were something of a test bed army during 2nd Edition, so I don't mind pulling things apart and re-doing some models (again). I thought it would be useful for those of us who are making this transition to discuss what we're doing and maybe contribute suggestions. It'd be great not to fill this thread with complaints about the changes - there are plenty of other places to vent.

Below are the changes I need to make to my SoH liber-compliant. It doesn't seem too bad, but I haven't yet worked out how many additional Centurions I need.

Cataphractii Praetor with thunder hammer => no change

Chaplain Consul with power fist => out (apparently Chaplains have no weapon options)

Cataphractii command squad => not sure yet; I haven't seen the leaked entry for command retinues

Veteran squad with mixture of combi weapons and melee weapons => problematic. May end up as a veteran tactical squad, minus the melee weapons, or perhaps as a retinue

Apothecary with power sword => weapon replaced with a chainsword

Contemptor => no change

Rapier battery (2) => no change (the new Rapier models came out virtually straight after I finished converting these, but I'll stick with mine)

Tactical squad (18) => no change

Despoiler squad (12) => no change, or will absorb some veterans with lightning claws and become Reavers

Recon squad with nemesis bolters (5) => hopefully unchanged

Tactical support squad with meltaguns (7) => no change

Skorpius => no change (other than apparently being nerfed)

Predators (2) => no change

Land Raider => no change

Rhino => no change

I haven't really bothered to read any of the leaked rules, but I can't imagine I'll need to make many changes. Maybe add a couple of characters.

Yeah, this is perhaps a bit premature without the actual libers in hand, but I got tired of being annoyed with it all and decided to start dealing with the changes.

Not quite answering the OP question, but my situation is that I am looking to jump back in with a new army and am unsure of what ruleset I should comply with. Clearly 3rd edition is the future and I suspect what the local players will be invested in. However my initial impressions are not great and I expect 2nd Edition will still have a national gaming scene, even if I have to travel or sign up to events in advance. I am therefore grappling with how to loadout my squads, as I don't know whether to play it cautious and build out-of-the-box, or go fully into 2nd Edition options and simply leave the option of playing 3rd Edition.
Worth mentioning that I don't enjoy magnetising my models and carrying around a small armoury of spare parts. I am likely to build them as a single load-out.

Some of the decisions I am weighing up;
- Medusan Immortals- Having to choose between Bolters or Volkite Chargers. I am likely to take ~20 of these guys so it's an important decision.
- Gorgon Terminators- Whether I should be adding in all the tricks. Fists, Combi-Weapons and especially Graviton Guns.
- Moritat- Grav Pistols or Plasma? The Grav Moritat is a holy terror in 2nd Edition but has not survived into 3rd Edition. I'd like to take one regardless for fluff and modelling. Being on foot was preferred but not essential.
- Iron Father- I don't especially like the official Terminator model and would much prefer him to be in power armour. Nothing in the 3rd Edition rules actually specifies Terminator Armour but I'd like the flexibility to model (and arm) as I like.
- Techmarines- A relatively minor annoyance but I plan on taking several and I enjoy the idea of arming them with Graviton, Plasma etc.
- I haven't yet decided which Consuls I want or how to arm them, but I imagine I'll be having similar thoughts once I get there.

I also have an old Raven Guard force from 1st Edition which I have no intention of picking up again as they are built from the old Forge World resins and a little stunty, plus full of bad conversions. If I were invested I'd have to re-arm my Mor Deythan but otherwise I think I'm relatively unscathed.

Happily, my Blood Angels (just over 3k of mkIV models, plus spares so I can build one or two more squads) have ported over with almost zero issues. However, my play experience is going to be completely different, as it used to be a Day of Revelation list! With that no longer being a thing, I'll be adding a Master of Descent so at least I won't lose that flavour altogether.

My Alpha Legion with Mech Allies has had its guts ripped out, but that is fine because I had retired the army and sent all of its parts of to other armies anyway. The Alpha Legion parts are painted more like Blackshields anyway, so I'm hoping for decent rules when they release the Blackshields pdf. I quite like the idea of painting a more traditional Alpha Legion army, and have done lots of bits-building, but I'll decide that later.

I have lots of Mech, some painted, some not. What happens with my Mech depends entirely on what options the pdf gives me. Right now, a Cybernetica list would be possible, but I'm not at all sure it would actually be good!

I also have lots of old Rogue Trader models, including many painted as Raven Guard. I am leaning towards painting all of the RT up as RG, Salamanders and Iron Hands with a Shattered Legions theme. That will probably be my starting point for H3resy.

I also have lots of old 80s Khorne Daemons, so I'll do a Ruinstorm list at some point. Assuming archdaemons and behemoths still exist, I have Zoids Redhorn and Redhorn II to convert into giant Juggernauts, so that'll be fun.

Though guards may sleep and ships may lay at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire.

Correct.

Cataphractii command squad => not sure yet; I haven't seen the leaked entry for command retinues

Your command squad should be fine. The Cataphractii seem to have survived the edition transition intact, without even getting options shunted to legacies like Tartaros did.

Veteran squad with mixture of combi weapons and melee weapons => problematic. May end up as a veteran tactical squad, minus the melee weapons, or perhaps as a retinue

Yeah sadly this squad is toast. Veteran tactical squads can't take melee weapons. Assault veterans have mandatory jump packs. Centurion command squads are a decent proxy for the 2.0 foot melee veterans that everyone has, but they still cannot take a melee weapon and any gun bigger than a pistol on the same model, so if you gave them that they're SOL.

Recon squad with nemesis bolters (5) => hopefully unchanged

Yep, still legal, but keep in mind their role has completely reversed now. In 2.0 they were backline snipers who traded the superior BS of their Nemesis Seekers counterpart for Line, being able to score and snipe at the same time. This is not a thing in 3.0, they now have a rule which limits how many VP they score instead, so they are now inferior backline objective holders to tacticals.

Skorpius => no change (other than apparently being nerfed)

Nerfed significantly at that, but not useless.
